Best roads, worst traffic. Perhaps the two go hand-in-hand. Since our roads are the best, perhaps it's for some rail investment, eh?

By the way, for those talking about side streets. Quote from the article:

Quote:
The new U.S. PIRG study on the nation’s crumbling highways found that Georgia’s vehicular arteries are in the best shape in the nation. But getting to those highways these days can be a teeth-chattering, bone-jarring ride.

The metro area’s side streets are increasingly fraught with potholes, bumps and divots. And decreased tax revenues mean that public works departments are having a harder time maintaining them, which causes further deterioration.

we definitely have some nice twisty roads up in the Suches/Dalonega areas! Any motorcycle owner can appreciate that!

I tend to speed my car up through those areas since it makes it more fun. My passengers usually start complaining about feeling sick. Like this (don't watch if you are easily startled):

Not even close to the worst traffic. That's a myth that gets wide play.

Fourth in the nation isn't close? Or perhaps you think Forbes and the Texas Transportation Institute are bad sources? Worst Cities For Traffic - Forbes.com

If only Atlanta wasn't so spread out, I wonder how much better our traffic issues would be.

I don't see what the criteria are that are being ranked, do you? Is it average trip time? Volume of vehicles per mile? What? NYC isn't even on the list...come on. That seems like BS to me.

Most of this stuff seems to be anecdotal, and I can tell you from my anecdotes, Atlanta can have some bad traffic on certain roads and at certain times, but not all roads and definitely not all times. Even when I sit in traffic on I-285 or other roads, it's very rarely just standing still....just moving slowly.

I've sat at the GWB in NYC, and on the 405 in Orange County, CA, and on the beltway in DC, and on the Mass Pike, Rte 2, Rte 1, Rte 24, and the southeast expwy in Boston.

I don't get startled easily when looking at things on my laptop but this one caught me off guard with the "nice ambiance." Perhaps it was because my expectations were different (i.e. I expected to see someone speeding through Deals Gap or in North Georgia). Too hilariously funny. I must share with friends and my husband now that I'm wide awake.

I am not trying to start an argument in any way but I must ask very kindly: have you guys lived/resided in other cities? For a city of our size and the rate it's grown, we're not doing too bad with traffic. I am constantly thankful of how efficient Atlanta's transportation network is for a city of it's size. I live in Nashville now but often come home to Atlanta and am continually thankful about how we are "on top of things."

Yes, traffic sucks, but the bottom line is that our traffic is so much better than many parts up North and out in L.A., etc. I can't speak for Dallas because I haven't spent a significant amount of time there to accurately compare (tho' I've heard many stories).

Yes, we could use some improvement and I am always big on that, but every city can always use some improvement.

As for the sprawl, I think that's more prevalent in Nashville. For a city of it's size, I am so surprised by how long people live in their cars in greater Nashville... It's ironic because it's really unnecessary (imagine if Cumming had become a "huge sprawling" city... 25 years ago.... we would have thought that was unnecessary at the time)

Anyways, just my two cents worth.

I'm guessing most warm weather states have the best roads in the country. I'm surprised Michigan is not at the top of the "Worst Roads" list. Some of what we have shouldn't even be considered roads, more like pot holes with some concrete.
