I can support this and I think these are the types of projects that could/should be incorporated into a regional tax plan.

The only problem I see with this plan is that it doesn't connect to a MARTA rail station and/or it doesn't take you from Cobb County to Midtown/Downtown. It seems like a good plan to move people within the county but if it wants to be part of a regional plan it needs to connect to something. I assume that is what they plan to do though... maybe this regional tax will help get projects like this built sooner?

Given that Cumberland is right on the edge of the county, that's as far as they can go alone. I agree that a connection should be planned, and some of the other stuff in the AJC discusses those plans.

Unless it connects to Marta I cant support it. I think its stupid to build light-rail that doesnt connect to Marta.

Tony, you have to look at the big picture. If everyone started thinking this way, there is ZERO chance the referendum will pass in 2012.

There is no way a $2 billion LRT line will be built without some sort of connection. You can bet on it.

I do agree that connection to MARTA makes sense, but that again works under the premise that all anyone wants to do is go downtown.

NEWSFLASH: People might just want to go from Town Center Mall to Cumberland Mall, or from points in between to one or both malls.

Why does everything have to revolve around MARTA and a trip downtown? Why can't residents of Cobb just travel within Cobb? Why is that not a valid use of transit dollars?

Because common sense says that residents of Cobb may want to ride Marta to the Airport, to a game downtown, a concent, to work, etc

It does connect with MARTA, just not on a heavy-use basis. There is an express MARTA bus that goes from Cumberland transit station to Arts Center.

Again, this couldn't transport a huge number of people between transit systems though but I believe there is a long range plan to fully extend MARTA to Cumberland.

First, that's not what you said. Here is what you actually said:

To me, that says that without a connection to MARTA, the line is not worth building and a "stupid" project that you would not support. To me, that says that residents of Cobb being able to spend their money to get around their county is a waste unless it connects to Atlanta.

Again, while I would support a connection to MARTA for the reasons you mention, they are not the be all, end all for transit in Cobb. Some folks, like me, may just want to go shopping and ride the LRV between Town Center and Cumberland.

700,000 people live in Cobb, and many never or rarely go downtown.
