FBI data from 2003 for some of the cities mentioned in this thread:

LA
2.1x the national average for violent crime per capita
.8x the national average for property crime per capita

Phoenix
1.16x the national average for violent crime per capita
1.50x the national average for property crime per capita

ATL
3.30x the national average for violent crime per capita
2.01x the national average for property crime per capita

Believe me, I want to believe that I'm out in left field on this, but I'm becoming less and less convinced that I am.

What you have to understand is this...

The true measure of a city's population is its metro area population. Considering the size and significance of the Atlanta Metro Area, the Atlanta city proper limits cover a very small area in comparison to other cities and their metro area population. So, if Atlanta's city proper limits (and the corresponding crime stats) covered a comparable area a la Phoenix, LA, Dallas, Houston, etc...the crime rate/crime per capita, etc. would be much smaller than it looks (or what is "officially" listed).

Many, many comparable parts within the city proper limits of Dallas, Houston, LA, Phoenix, etc. are outside of the city proper limits here in Metro Atlanta.

There does seem to be a lot of denial on the part of some Atlanta residents, and I'm sure I will be attacked on this forum for expressing my opinion. But I think that the golden Atlanta myth that sprung up during the 80s and through the Olympics has started to take a darker turn. Not sure where things are going, but I monitor this forum to stay aware of what is going on near my parents who are getting older and still sometimes have lingering memories of East Cobb in the go-go 80s.

DC is horrible. Worst place in America to live. DC crime is horrible, not like it was 20 years ago but its worse than Atlanta by a long shot

- DC is ranked #1 in STD's

WHo in the heck would live in DC???

People move here and complain about small crimes when Dallas, DC, Houston, etc have to worry about multiple killings each day. Id rather take my chance worrying about small crimes verses murders anyday

little defensive aren't you? Atlanta is a small city, nothing like intown DC. You have 100x more people walk around and using subways in DC. IN Atlanta, 90% of the people you see on the sidwalks are human trash. Bums and ugly people who haven't showered in days hanging out at MARTA busstops. DC actually has normal people.

Tony your loyalty to Atlanta is admirable. The truth is, that area has a very bad rep outside of Atlanta. You wouldnt believe some of the questions people ask me about Atlanta, some of them completely untrue others are pretty dead on. The fact is a lot of this country doesnt see Atlanta is such a positive light as it may have in the past and only the city of Atlanta is to blame for that.

Default My 2 cents

Frankly Atlanta is not my original home.I chose it.I have roots in a couple of places.I tried them because I knew what Atlanta had and was open to the idea of trying somewhere else first.

Today I had the best time listening to House music at Piedmont Park at dusk. There were people from every walk of life just enjoying themselves with even their kids.

I can say with ease that I feel no less safer in Atlanta than when I lived in Philly,Washington D.C. or other places I visited. Is Atlanta the safest no way.The police definately need to step up there game.

However if I can do dance with families and people from all over the world. In the park on a Sunday at dust withe the Atlanta skyline in the video and be safe with hundreds of other people under a pavillion, then I am fine:

Is this the reason why so many people choose to live outside of the city? Given how bad traffic is, I would think that you'd have to have a pretty powerful reason for living outside of the city center ... is it simply to avoid crime?

If so, it's funny how no one actually discusses/admits that.

According to 2008 FBI uniform crime report, there are many cities Atlanta's size that have fewer violent crimes than Atlanta.

City of Albuquerque 527,464 4,718
City of Atlanta 533,016 7,403
City of Austin 753,535 3,935
City of Boston 604,465 6,676
City of Charlotte 758,769 7,070
City of Denver 592,881 3,361
City of Fort Worth 701,345 4,601

That's as far as I got through the alphabet. More on link:

None of these cities have populations in there metro as big as Atlanta except Boston and Ft.Worth.
Also look at the rate per 100,000 residents.Atlanta's is lower than Boston,Houston,Albuquerque,Charlotte and many others.
