It is. But it's mostly due to the end of the Census. The sad thing is that even without the 1700, Augusta unemployment is higher than it was 1 year ago.

Oh, and does anybody remember the 1000+ people that showed up for a handful of jobs at Goodwill a few weeks ago?

Yeah, they really played up Goodwill a bit too much. Sure, it's a multi-service center but they're not creating thousands of jobs. Heck, they're not even creating hundreds of jobs. It's something, though. I think it will balance out. It seems Electrolux hasn't finished their Carolina move just yet. I believe they're relocating to Anderson but I still see call center employees taking their smoke breaks there. Maybe they'll change their minds about consolidating offices. :X

The 1,700 figure was mostly the lost of census jobs...

Electrolux moved to Charlotte, NC and not Anderson, SC... Electrolux isn't moving their call center away from Augusta. The center is going to stay in the current location off Bobby Jones Expressway...

May unemployment figures for some of the GA metros....
Unemployment Rates for Metropolitan Areas
Warner Robins 7.3%
Athens 7.4%
Savannah 8.3%
Valdosta 8.3%
Augusta 8.6%
Columbus 9.2%
Atlanta 9.9%
Macon 10.1%

That's good news. I recall reading an article that said they were slowly phasing out their BJE location. Ah yes, that's right.. It was Charlotte, not Anderson. I knew it was one of those big ones that keeps getting mentioned around in the forums. I can imagine the Census definitely had a big impact. We had several people visiting our apartment complex so I can imagine the total staff count was exponentially bigger than what we experienced in our side of town.

Thanks for the stats, Nort. 8)

Electrolux has a manufacturing facility in Anderson I believe, next to where that 1000+ jobs tissue plant that was thinking about constructing in Augusta ended up locating...

Goodwill wasn't played up IMO. It's a real example of desperation for employment in the CSRA.

There will be a rise in our unemployment rate for the next few months. Mark my words. I think we'll also see a decrease in home sales and a rise in foreclosures.
