Augusta Commission rolls back taxes | The Augusta Chronicle
A tax digest that grew by $51.3 million prompted Augusta commissioners to roll back taxes by 0.1 percent Tuesday. The commission unanimously agreed to advertise the new lowered rate of 8.056 mills, down from the 8.149 mills Augusta has levied since 2007.

"Based on the fact that we've been experiencing the worst recession we've seen, to roll it back even a small portion this year speaks to the great job this body is doing," Mayor Deke Copenhaver said.

YAY! Tax breaks are always a good thing in my book. Deke's the man! Now, if we can see some more-than-just-marginal improvements on economic indicators, we can all breathe more easily. 8)

They voted to slash two of the fourlough days... But I don't know if you consider that more-than-just-marginal improvements...

Well, the fourlough days are quite troublesome on the days you really need government contacts to be there for you. This is all good news. Believe me, I'm not trying to steal anyone's thunder. The way I see it, any step in the right direction, no matter how big or small, is significant progress. 8)

Augusta was recently featured in a Georgia Public Broadcasting article...
Augusta Rolls Back Property Taxes
The rollback comes as the area continues to see a strong economy backed by its medical community as well as Fort Gordon, Savannah River Site and Plant Vogtle. Mayor Deke Copenhaver says Augusta has weathered the recession.

"I’m hopeful for the rest of the state," said Copenhaver."I believe we’ve got to come out of this thing at some point and there are some signs of life but, at this point, Augusta is the exception and not the norm."

The Richmond County school board voted unanimously Tuesday to tentatively roll back its portion of the county millage by 0.232 mills, resulting in a savings of $8.12 a year for the owner of an average $100,000 home.

The decision came after the board was told that about $1 million had been realized from conservation efforts, other cost-saving measures and an improved tax base.

This is the 3rd roll back since 7/20/10......

Augusta rolls back millage | The Augusta Chronicle
In a noon called meeting, the Augusta Commission voted to roll back the countywide millage rate by 0.093 percent.

The change will lower the annual property tax bill on a $100,000 house by $4.20, to $365.26. In Augusta's urban services district, the reduction will take about $6.12 off the tax bill for a $100,000 house.
