The second(Augusta) and third(Savannah) most important cities in the state need a direct route. Please hurry up and build interstate 3!

Augusta grows its shipping economy, state says | The Augusta Chronicle
Augusta claims a growing share of commerce to and from shipping ports in Savannah and Brunswick, according to a new study by the Georgia Ports Authority.

“Central Savannah River Area businesses moved more than $1.1 billion of cargo to and from the state’s ports during fiscal year 2010,” the study said. “Richmond County, which accounted for $689.2 million of cargo in, had the sixth largest impact of any county in the state on the ports’ business.”

The $689,193,428 in imports and exports channeled through Georgia’s ports was an increase from fiscal 2009, when Augusta ranked seventh in the state, with $414,326,094 in shipped goods.

The top five counties for exports and imports were first-place Fulton, followed by Cobb, Gwinnett, Chatham, Dekalb and then Richmond.

Fiscal 2011 is also shaping up to be a growth year, according to the study. Container ship volume is measured in TEUs, or “20-foot equivalents.” In the first three months of fiscal 2011, the ports authority moved 742,637 TEUs, which is a 20-percent increase compared with 618,256 TEUs moved in first quarter of 2010.
