According to an article in the Augusta Chronicle on December 16, 2011, The Brookings Institute listed the Augusta economy as one of the 20 worst in the nation. On the bottom of the list with Augusta were Atlanta and Columbia.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver said he is working to cultivate a technology sector that depends less on federal funding. “We’re heavily reliant on the federal government in many ways, and that doesn’t allow for much growth,” he said. “What was a strength during the recession has become a drag during the recovery.” Copenhaver said he believes that Augusta has all the necessary ingredients to attract high-tech companies and that those companies are the ones that hire and grow

This my list of thing that holding Augusta back
Need more young voter
We have racial problem between some of the commissioners that's certain thing don't get pass
More high end jobs
College football program will boost the community and more jobs will come
More police officer
A better development team
Landscaping
If you can think of thing please add

Very true, and that's also why many of Augusta's peers that rely more heavily on public funds ranked towards the bottom also (many of them state capitals and cities with military bases). They tend to be the last to enter the recession and the last to experience recovery. The good thing is that many of these cities have a very stable base upon which to grow their private sectors.
