Group Working On Plan To Address Downtown Augusta Crime Issues
A couple we met downtown on Tuesday says they moved to downtown Augusta a few months ago. We caught up with them Tuesday at a downtown restaurant as they waited to move the last of their stuff out of the home they were renting. The two say downtown's crime problems are just too much.

The crime rate for assaults in downtown is below the national average, according to Anthony Robinson, who is a strategic advisor for Augusta Tomorrow,a group tasked with developing downtown.

Robinson agrees that at least some of the crime happening downtown could be prevented by targeting the groups, specifically juveniles, who are committing the crimes and giving them something else to do.

I agree we need to make downtown as safe as possible, but I think were 'blessed' compared to other cities if fights are the overwhelmingly majority of the worst crimes being reported...

I think it becomes more about perception if the assault rate is below the national average... Some peoole will never feel comfortable around large groups of teens which First Friday tends to bring out...
