What is going on with all that clear land next to the carmax off of I-20. The land has been vacant for a while. To me it would be a perfect location for a 15000 seat multi purpose arena. What's going on with the land.

Before the recession it was a 300k sq. ft. retail center(Gander Mountain, Northern Toole, etc)

A small portion of the land(13 acres) surrounding Carmax won't be vacant for long.. The Gateway was approved on 8-3-2012...

Planning & Zoning - Project Search Details

One problem with a new arena on the property is the location on the county line.. The Carmax is located in Richmond County, and you a small portion of the land(btw Carmax-Flowing Wells rd) located in Columbia County...

Wouldn't that be counter productive to the city's effort to make downtown the focal point of the region?

Look at Raleigh, the main arena is west of the of the city.

No new arena is anywhere close to being built in Augusta... but if one were to be built eventually, why put it there? Almost all arenas/stadiums are located in or near the downtown area of the city they're built in.
