Work begins on Peach Orchard Road Cook Out | The Augusta Chronicle

Nearly a year after its initial construction plans were approved, the Cook Out burger chain has begun work on what will be its fourth area restaurant and its first in south Augusta. The quick-serve chain known for its char-grilled burgers and extensive milkshake menu is developing the 2,900-square-foot restaurant at 3012 Peach Orchard Road on a parcel previously occupied by a buffet restaurant.

From Tobacco Road, to Windsor Spring, and up and down Gordon Highway, Mayor Davis says the opportunities are in South Augusta.

"We have the land that's available, we have plans that have been done over the last 15 to 20 years so now lets take them and run with those things," Mayor Hardie Davis said.

The mayor is focusing on a plan put together in 2010 that outlined areas all across South Augusta that could still be used today.

"There are people that are very interested in the economic growth and development in this region, in this corridor," Mayor Davis said.

Now, the interest is increasing. The Mayor says cyber companies are coming in. Developer Dennis Trotter said residential developers are becoming more and more interested in leaving Columbia County and doing work in south Richmond County.

"With cyber command especially and with some growth that we have going on downtown I think this could all be an area that also benefits from that growth," Mary Davis said.

The tour highlighted success the city is already seeing such as on the even busier Tobacco and Deans Bridge Roads.

"When people come to south Augusta, whether it's a restaurant, whether it's a new grocer those investments are long term and they get their return on investment," Mayor Davis said.

The mayor says he plans to sit down with a small group of commissioners to see what policies can be put in place to incentivize developers to come into south Augusta.

A Town Wings is replacing the former Sonic off Peach Orchard road. The new Cookout is nearby and moving along rather quickly.

While not a development story, I believe that resources like the dream center are important to turning around South Augusta. I really hope this center has a positive impact on the area...

Located off of Peach Orchard Road, tucked away behind Stevens Creeks’ Southpoint campus where Norsworthy’s the pastor; this facility may look like nothing more than just an ordinary building. But what’s happening inside is anything BUT ordinary.

“Year to date we’ve served over 15-hundred people food right here in this community,” said Kellie Cardona, Augusta Dream Center pastor.

Kellie Cardona helps lead the charge in serving their South Augusta neighbors as best they can. But soon that number will increase dramatically, relaunching as the Augusta Dream Center.

“By partnering with the Dream Center organization, we’ll be able to provide more hours of operation so we’ll just be able to make a larger impact here,” said Pastor Cardona.

The impact of what a Dream Center can do for a city has already been proven. When North Charleston launched theirs 9 years ago USA Today had listed them as the 7th most dangerous city in the nation. Today, they’re ranked 63rd and crime has reduced in that area by 25%. In Los Angeles where the first Dream Center was started 19 years ago crime’s gone down an incredible 70%.

“It’s definitely going to help. It’s going to put confidence back in to people because they have food, they have clothes,” said Jonathan West who lives in South Augusta.

Jonathan West lives behind where the Dream Center will be. He’s so sure of the positive impact it’s going to make that he wanted to make it easy for his neighbors to access it…building a bridge that leads right to it.

“It helps them. They don’t have to walk up the big hill and then walk back down the big hill to get to the bottom down here. So they can just come right over,” said West.

“I think it’s more evident now than before that the church has strategically been put here, God put it here,” said Pastor Norsworthy.

“Our vision for the future is to provide free medical care to those who are living below poverty. As well as to begin a mentoring program to increase the graduation rate for students at the local high schools here,” said Pastor Cardona.

On Nov. 4, ETG broke ground on a 26,000-square-foot facility adjacent to its existing operations. In the fall of 2017 it will house Augusta Data Storage, a subsidiary company now responsible for 40 percent of ETG’s revenues. The $2.5 million facility will allow for storage space for 150,000 more boxes.

The facility will be outfitted to meet unique specifications for record storage, including climate controlled NARA-compliant storage, making it one of only 26 NARA-compliant storage facilities in the United States. The current set-up for ETG is a series of buildings totaling 92,000 square feet to accommodate all of ETG’S business.

“When we built this and moved in, everything fit in a third of this space,” Ellefson said. “Now, this space only represents a third of our records.”

This move will help ETG to comply with federal records retention requirements that its customers require. Ellefson said more government-affiliated customers are requesting compliant facilities for their records. One of Augusta Data Storage’s major contracts is with a company that manages Medicare and Medicaid benefits for railroad employees.

“They were the driving factor,” Ellefson said.

The company also hopes to create 20 more office spaces by relocating Augusta Data Storage personnel, human resources and safety & compliance staffers to better serve the public, with easier access from Mike Padgett Highway.

“I’m proud of how South Augusta is growing,” added Ellefson. Across the street, a developer remodeled three older homes into modern office space and nearby Ireland Electric moved into its new facility.

“This is an exciting time for Ellefson Transportation Group,” Jim Thorpe, the company’s director of business development, said at the ceremonial event. “You might not travel Mike Padgett Highway on a daily basis, but we hope if you get the chance over the next year you’ll swing by, slow down and take a look at the progression of the building here.”

Thorpe was hired years ago and along with Ellefson’s daughter Kristin has carefully re-branded Ellefson Transportation Group as an umbrella company providing moving-related services under the names ADSI Moving Systems, Acme Moving and Storage and Augusta Go-Mini’s – and the separate, Augusta Data Storage business, created in 1992.

The new building is off Mike Padgett. Not the area described in the OP, but still a noteworthy development. It maybe time to start a new thread dedicated to South Augusta. That way others can hear about Tobacco, Mike Padgett, Deans Bridge, or Gordon Hwy.

The Bennett buildings and New Century Homes land has been sold on Peach Orchard Rd and is being cleared out. Anyone know what's going in there?
