Bi-Lo Holdings announced Tuesday it is closing 23 Bi-Lo and Winn Dixie stores on or before Monday, 17 November. Affected stores are located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina and South Carolina. A complete list of the closing stores is not available yet at Bi-Lo, Bi-Lo Holdings and Winn Dixie's websites.

Is anyone aware of any Bi-Lo stores in the Augusta area that may be closing?

As of right now I haven't heard of any BI-LO stores planning on closing. I wouldn't be surprised if we heard some announcements about more Food Lion's closing however.

Stores known to be closing from what I've gleaned from news articles include...

5 Winn-Dixie stores in Alabama:
  • 104 River Square Plaza in Hueytown
  • 2402 Old Springville Road in Clay
  • 2055 Coliseum Blvd. in Montgomery
  • 4035 East Blvd. in Montgomery
  • 1300 Gilmer Ave. in Tallassee
2 known WD's in GA:
  • 2111 Bemiss Road, Valdosta
  • 1715 Norman Drive, Valdosta
  • 1627 South Lumpkin Road, Columbus
4 known Bi-Lo stores in SC:
  • 2712 Anderson Road in Greenville
  • 3039 Wade Hampton Blvd in Taylors
  • Cheraw
  • Bennetsville
3 known Florida WD stores:
  • 3131 Forest Hill Blvd., West Palm Beach
  • 3700 Broadway, Riviera Beach
  • 1225 West 45th St., Mangonia Park

That accounts for over half of the 23 closings. Haven't seen an actual list anywhere, but it's apparent all the stores have been told already.

None right now that I have heard but that could change in another year or two especially for the ones near the new mini Walmarts they are building like near the Bi-Lo on Belair Rd and the one near the corner of Windsor Springs Rd and Tobacco Rd.
Wont bother me if they close down all their stores though as their customer service has really gone downhill I noticed these last few months for some reason, in fact its atleast as bad as most Food Lions and every Walmart now imo.

Bi-Lo's present stores:

Bi-Lo replaced or added several stores between 1994 and 1996 using a similar store format. None of these stores have pharmacies:
  • #5514, Daniel Village, 2803 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, Georgia 30909-3907
  • #5542, 3457 Peach Orchard Road, Augusta, Georgia 30906-5768
  • #5560, Southgate Plaza, 1631 Gordon Hwy, Augusta, Georgia 30906-2219
  • #5604, Midland Valley, 4435 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Clearwater, South Carolina 29842-4875
  • #5625, 4480 Columbia Road, Martinez, Georgia 30907-4253

Bi-Lo #5292, Windsor Place, 2512 Tobacco Road, Hephzibah, Georgia 30815-7099, opened in 1991 or 1992. It expanded and added a pharmacy around 1998 or 1999.

Bi-Lo #5105, Petersburg Shoppes, 500 Furys Ferry Road, Martinez, Georgia 30907-7900, is the last new constructed store opened. I think it opened between 1998 and 2000.

Competition:

Bi-Lo's major competitors throughout its footprint are Publix and Walmart. Walmart is opening Neighborhood Market stores quickly. I do not know if it would consider opening a Supercenter store in the town of Hephzibah should south Augusta take off in new residential construction. Publix's stores are in north Augusta and Martinez. It has not opened any stores in the area in several years. I do not know if Publix is actively seeking sites for new store locations.

Kroger, with the acquisition of Harris Teeter, gives Bi-Lo difficulty in the area and in other markets like Charlotte, North Carolina, Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina; and Chattanooga, Tennessee. It does not have much presence in Columbia, South Carolina and upstate South Carolina, both markets dominated by Bi-Lo.

Food Lion is a minor competitor on the way out.

Default Kroger Acquiring Bi-Lo Holdings? Speculation

There is speculation The Kroger Company may acquire Bi-Lo Holdings. If a transaction occurs, the Augusta market will have one less competitor. Several stores would have to close being in proximity of other stores.

Default Kroger Acquiring Bi-Lo Holdings? Speculation

Bi-Lo Holdings is in the process of remodeling several Winn Dixie stores. Plans for these remodels were in progress prior to the speculation rising.

Bi-Lo Holdings announced last week Ian McLeod was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer, effective Monday, 2 March 2015. McLeod succeeds Randall Onstead, who is departing Sunday, 1 March. Former Executive Vice President Mark Prestidge departed at the end of 2014.

Bi-Lo has been up for sale before. Lone Star Funds tried to sell it during 2007 and 2008. Delhaize America, parent of Food Lion and Hannaford's, made an intent to acquire Bi-Lo when it was in bankruptcy proceedings in 2009. Its intention was rejected by Lone Star Funds.

Kroger:
Two years ago, Harris Teeter Supermarkets explored a sale of its company. Several months later, in July 2013, it announced it was being acquired by Kroger.

I will not be surprised if Kroger wants to continue infilling and increasing its presence in the southeastern United States. Bi-Lo Holdings would be attractive to get into the upstate South Carolina, western North Carolina and Chattanooga, Tennessee regions through Bi-Lo' stores and into Florida using Winn Dixie's stores.

Albertson's-Safeway:
The Federal Trade Commission gave its approval to Albertson's acquiring Safeway. Ranked third and fourth as the largest food retailers behind Walmart and Kroger respectively, Albertson's-Safeway strengthens its position as the third largest food retailer.

Mergers and acquisitions do eliminate competitors and cleans up the playing field in many markets.

You forgot Winn-Dixie is still in Columbus, south Georgia, most of Alabama including Birmingham, and New Orleans with stores. I doubt Kroger wouldn't want to enter in New Orleans and Birmingham retail markets considering both are lacking competitive grocery stores. It would also be a way for Kroger to finally get into Columbus whom is the only major Georgia market without the store as a major grocer.
