North Augusta would be very wise to not start construction on the ballpark UNTIL financing is secured for the private sector developments and they begin construction on that part too. The entire rationale for NA financing teh ballpark with TAD was that the private development associated with PJ would pay for it.. but if that private development does not happen then NA taxpayers will be left holding the bag.

Groundbreaking for the stadium set for next week.

Quote:
The groundbreaking of the North Augusta Ballpark to be located at Riverside Village at Hammonds Ferry will take place Thursday, May 25 at noon.

The Augusta GreenJackets, Single-A Affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, currently play on the other side of the river in Augusta at Lake Olmstead.

“This day has been years in the making and a special milestone to commemorate a new era of Professional Baseball and Entertainment in the CSRA. Although theoretically, we have passed the point where we are beginning construction, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to hold this ‘official’ ceremony and share this momentous day with everyone in the community,” Jeff Eiseman, President & Partner of the Augusta GreenJackets said.

According to a release from the GreenJackets, free parking and shuttles will be available at the Medac Parking Deck along with the City of North Augusta Municipal Building down to the groundbreaking.

"The City of North Augusta is pleased the five year effort on this transformational project has made it a reality. Baseball will be an important part making this a regional destination. We are looking forward to hearing the words 'Play ball' in 2018," said Mayor Bob Pettit, City of North Augusta.

Riverside Village at Hammonds Ferry will feature the state of the art home of the Augusta GreenJackets, a Crowne Plaza Hotel & Conference Center, Apartment living, Senior Living, Retail, Restaurants, Class “A” Office Space and more all in a live, work, play environment, according to the release.

This is still very risky for the taxpayers of NA and Aiken County... for one thing the private developments that are supposed to pay off the bonds have not even secured financing ad their is no guarantee under the contract that they will be built. Just look at Stockton, CA as a example of why this is very risky. Stockton went bankrupt over a similar type development.

Again, this is one area where I can shower praise on leaders of Augusta-Richmond County.. they were wisely cautious on this and did not want to move forward on any stadium deal that did not have 100% guarantees that the private component would be built under a certain timeline. The stadium boosters promised the moon but never gave any guarantees.. they wanted the city to move forward on securing the land and building the stadium.. but never said what the private component would be and never gave any guarantees that anything other than a stadium would be built to offset the bonds. Hopefully this works out in NA's favor but history is not on there side.

As long as the private developers are upholding their end of the agreement to build the private components that will pay off the bonds then this will most likely be a win for NA and Aiken County
