Cooper, a beginning freshman from Dalton, Ga., helped the university achieve double-digit growth this fall in three key enrollment areas and is part of a historic number of freshmen from outside the Augusta area, a university official said. AU saw a 12.8 percent increase in new freshman applications over the previous year, a 10 percent increase in acceptances and, most importantly, an 11.3 percent increase in new freshman enrollment, with a class of 875 students. Cooper is among 436 in that class, almost half, who are from outside Augusta.

“That is our highest out of area population in institutional history,” said David Barron, associate vice president for enrollment services. But it is more than just adding bodies, he said. The grade point average of those new freshmen has also been climbing and their freshman index – a combination of ACT and SAT scores and grade point average – has been steadily increasing as well, with about 75 percent already at the 2500 and above measure the University System of Georgia sets as a minimum admission criteria to a research university, a level AU is striving to reach, Barron said.

“We’re not just going after quantity, we are going after quality students that meet our aspirational goals,” he said. It is also more reflective of the state as a whole – while about 20 percent of the university’s students are black, the incoming freshman class is at 24 percent.
