An Atlanta firm has purchased Wrightsboro Plaza from Augusta University and said it plans to convert the mostly vacant shopping center into a climate-controlled self-storage facility.

Its long term plans could include redeveloping the 10-acre property’s Wrightsboro Road frontage into retail and restaurant space.

“We’re hoping it will be a big improvement to the neighborhood,” said Jim Jarrell, a partner in Augusta Storage LLC, which will operate the business as Forest Hills Storage.

Jarrell said the former retail strip center at 3116-3136 Wrightsboro Road will be renovated into more than 45,000-square-feet of storage ranging in size from 5-foot by 5-foot units to 10-foot by 20-foot units. Wrightsboro Plaza was developed in 1979 as a Winn-Dixie and previously housed a discount grocery store and a beauty supply retailer.

The center’s last remaining tenant, Dollar General, is moving into a free-standing store at 3156 Wrightsboro Road later this year.

Ah yes, when I think of things that could be done to improve an area, another massive self-storage facility is the first thing that comes to mind!

Supermarket Winn-Dixie, 3136 Wrightsboro Road, Augusta, Georgia 30909-0316, closed by the mid-1990's.

Self-storage facilities are debatable on being big improvements to neighborhoods. Many new residences being constructed lack enough storage space. This fuels the need for additional self-storage facilities. On the other hand, prime retail locations that could be redeveloped for new retail are also being targeted by self-storage facilities, fitness centers, for profit colleges, call centers, etc.

No, people who have too much JUNK are what fuels the need for additional self-storage facilities. Building a new residence means building it with space for what you need. Anything you can get by with being left at a self-storage facility for months on end, you can just as easily get rid of. It's understandable to need somewhere to park a boat or camper when your HOA doesn't allow it, but if you need space for boxes and boxes of things you just can't let go of, you have a problem.

If Augusta-Richmond County wants to be self-storage friendly, it needs to come up with an ordinance for future facilities to be aesthetically appealing.

Well its definitely an improvement over whats already there...a mostly abandoned, ugly, decaying shopping center. After the North leg shopping center was redone, this was the last eyesore left so I'm glad someone is doing something with it even if it is a business I won't be using.
