I live in Atlanta and haven't been to Augusta since 2000. Boy was I suprised at how much has changed since then. The suburbs have growned tremendously. Almost like Atlanta's suburbs in some cases. Downtown has improved dramatically since 8 years ago. I saw alot more people walking around downtown than when I last visited. The highway construction does make Augusta seem like alot is going on. The Augusta mall was simply amazing. When did things start to pick up in Augusta? I thought Savannah probably had the best chance to become the second major city in georgia. But Augusta might win that instead.

I would say in the year of 06/07. That's when the 1 billion NSA on Ft. Gordon. The massive goverment funded 350 million I-20/520 interchange, and the 100 million Augusta mall lifestyle center started picking up steam.

The new terminal at Augusta regional airport gave the city a great lift. The white's building(residential/retail) has been a catalyst for a new resurgence downtown.

Too many goverment funded projects at once in the area. Majority being highway/road improvements. It's like they're trying to build Augusta all up at once. Scott Nixon Memorial Drive, Palmetto pkwy(I-520 on SC side miles of brand new interstate), Saint Sebastian pkwy, SR pkwy, I-20/520 interchange, Grovetown interchange, Thomson bypass. There are even more which is crazy. Driving down I-20 is almost like a obstacle course. Because of all the construction happening.
