After four years of development, Augusta electric vehicle maker Tomberlin Group is ready to produce the Anvil, a four-person, street-legal, low-speed electric car.

Golf car makers E-Z-Go and Club Car have been diversifying over the years into low-speed electric vehicles for uses off the golf course, including neighborhood transportation.

Mr. Tomberlin said he has a "healthy respect" for the two golf car giants that make Augusta the electric-vehicle capital of the world but doesn't feel his company really competes with them.

The Anvil has the appearance of a small Jeep. It has been driven on Broad Street in tests.

Tomberlin executive Andy Johnson said production will begin at the end of July. The vehicle will be assembled locally. The company, which is headquartered at 3125 Washington Road, has more than 50 employees.

SEE THE ANVIL ON TV

The Tomberlin Group, an Augusta-based electric vehicle company, will show off the Anvil at 8 a.m. Monday on CBS' Early Show.

They will appear again at 5 p.m. Monday on Bloomberg TV.

On Tuesday, the company will appear on Fox Business News at 7:45 a.m.

Ready for the road

I saw them last week doing test runs up and down Broad street. What is the starting price of the vehicle?

$16,400 (suggested retail) - 10% (federal tax credit) = $14,760 (your cost)

Seems like it would not fit in a place like Riverwood Plantation. That price is about double the price of a new golf cart.

Though it looks pretty cool

At that cost I'm afraid this may end up being more of a novelty. The article mentions that the top speed is around 25 miles per hour.. that would be fine for secondary streets, but would be very difficult to take onto highways or major arterial roads. This would be perfect for a place like Peachtree city which has a network of roads dedicated to electric vehicles.
Has anyone heard of The Nano? It will cost about half of what the anvil costs and will get about 40 miles per gallon and can fast enough to drive on highways. I think it is scheduled to be released in the US market sometime in 2011.

Nano is by Tata Motors of India. Not sure when they are going to release the Nano to the US. Tata is the company that bought Jaguar and Land Rover.
