I wonder why Macon has the smallest economy out of all the 2nd tier cities? It has all the thing a city can ask for to help growth. Augusta and Savannah are the class of the 2nd tier.

One reason is because Warner Robins is its own MSA.Not like it used to be.Pu the two together it is equal or greater.

Savannah and Columbus have a CSA too. It would be higher than Macon's CSA.

I wouldn't worry about Macon, its only a hour to Atlanta. Growth will have sooner or later, look at Fayette, and Newman counties recent growth.

"Get more for less in these bargain boomtowns"??? Would all of these areas be categorized as 'boomtowns'??? There are a few on here that I would think would be suspect. There is a reason why some of them are cheap. But If I am reading this correctly.. Manchester, NH is the cheapest metro and Brownsville, TX is the most expensive cheap city? I wonder if people actually read this stuff and say.. "Wow Flint, MI is cheaper than Fayetteville, NC... I gotta get my bags packed"

I agree. A greater faction of arts would make it a lot more desirable to live here. We need some serious performing arts centers like lilmusket said and some more interest in stuff like ballet, opera, and classical music like Atlanta has. Also a zoo would be great for families and some larger museums. The canal is great, but that's about the only thing around. Some more of the cultural stuff would also draw more wealthy people, which would boost the economy.
