What the heck is a Best Buy Mobile? There's a Best Buy close by. Strange they're bringing something to the mall.

Best Buy Mobile is Best Buy's smaller format store that concentrates on cell phones, tablets and laptops. This is the growth vehicle for Best Buy.
It was just announced yesterday they were closing 50 of their traditional Best Buys stores and looking to downsize the footprint of many of their larger format stores

I saw that they were closing 50 stores and adding a bunch of these mobile stores, but none of the articles explained what those new stores were going to be. Strange to close a bunch of stores only to open new ones. They're opening 100 stores in China while they close the 50 here. Strange.

It is strange for a company to say they are having a hard time finally to close 50 stores, open up 100 new ones in America and then another 100 or so in Asia. If you're really having that hard of a time financially, pouring money into new stores IS strange!

This isnt strange for them. Its part of their strategy to evolve with the market. The mobile stores probably have considerably less overhead than their normal stores. With the way people shop online these days im sure we will see them close their underperforming stores and replace them with the BB Mobile stores. All Best Buy has turned into is a preview house for amazon and other online retailers.People go there and check out the TVs and such , they then find them online and buy them. Computers and cell phones might be some of the only products that people will go and actually buy in a normal store.
On the Asian front, that is an untapped market for American electronic retailers. China has over 1 billion people so Im sure thats what the execs see. Japan on the other hand, I believe will be hard to break into. The size of Japanese electronic stores makes a normal Best Buy store look like a corner convenience store.
Mall management is doing a good job of keeping spaces filled. Would have loved to see Chipotle over Moes though.

those best buy mobiles we had all over the north. Almost always in a mall or outlets stores. It is their version of an apple store..were they set of demo stations, of all the new gadgets that may draw in the younger hipster crowds to buy and have products serviced...like an apple store does.
