I think we can start a thread on our growing colleges/universities. Augusta has three higher education centers. That are expanding in a very large way over the next couple of years..

How will all the growth change Augusta in the future.....

MCG..... New $112 million School of Dentistry under construction. Over $200 million will be spent in 2011 for a School of Medicine and Educational Commons. A 150 room student dorm is going up on the old fatmans property. The old student housing on 15th street. The old student housing will be demolished when the new dorms open 2011. The remaining acres will be used for future projects.

ASU..... Trying to expand on the 100 plus acres on the Patch. The Wrightsboro campus will be bigger than the Hill/Summerville campus in 10 years. Student population is predicted to double over the next couple of years.

Paine College..... The 25 year master plan is underway. It will be a total of 5 diffrent phases. The first phase will cost up to $20 million. The first phase addresses the first five years- and includes a new academic building; a new resident life area for student housing; a facelift to the college's main administrative building, called Haygood Holsey; and a new Health Education Activities Learning Complex. The HEAL complex could be considered an anchor for the first phase.

The Health Education and Activities Learning center is a 80,000 square foot space geared toward more than exercise. A new Laney Walker main entrance is planned to open the campus to the community. The HEAL complex will cost about $14 million. The college has pulled in $4 million so far

As MCG and Augusta State grow, think how much bigger Augusta will become. MCG can be a premier medical school in the nation.

Paine College will receive $1 million a year for the next three years from the U.S. Department of Energy.

The college has joined forces with Savannah River Site on a project that includes research, job pipeline and work force development initiatives. The goal is to help the Energy Department retain and attract a knowledgeable work force, said Dr. Tina Marshall-Bradley, the special assistant to the provost.

Across the river, the University of South Carolina Aiken, which will start undergraduate and graduate fall classes Thursday, also is seeing growth. Andrew Hendrix, USC Aiken's admissions director, said the university will welcome its second-largest freshman class in the school's history, with 630 enrollees.
This year's class includes students from 40 of the 46 South Carolina counties and 15 other states. Hendrix said the school has pushed to recruit more freshmen from outside traditional markets to diversify the student body. The university also will have 25 high school seniors enrolled in concurrent classes.
USC Aiken's admission's office says official overall figures won't be available until Aug. 23.
Undergraduate numbers there last fall were at about 3,200. Last fall, there also was a 7 percent increase in incoming first-year students, compared with the previous year.

“Can be” is a key work. This institution needs a major change in its corporate mentality.
