The real problem with South Augusta's retail scene is not crime, it's location and land also the fact that many of it's residents are so willing to drive to west Augusta to shop, dine and for entertainment. Most of these establishments are located in close proximity to the interstates 20 and 520 in the past decade or so a lot of the undeveloped land in west Augusta along these highways have been cleared and new developments (Augusta Exchange/ Village at Riverwatch) are starting to open, as this land is cleared bringing new retailers and newer facilities with them attracting more and more shoppers and retailers away from possibly locating in south Augusta. Many of the intersections of 520 in south Augusta were developed in the late 70's and early 80's there are only small patches of undeveloped land along 520 in South Augusta and those are between where it bisects old Mccduffie rd which has no interchange not even a bridge to connect the 2 portions of this road and Milledgeville rd 1 side has a park that no one uses and the other has been turned into a dump. The other section is across the interstate from Augusta Tech in which a developed once proposed the development called South Augusta Station in which he tried to attract Target and a couple of others to locate there. It was unsuccessful due to the fact that it could be only accessed from Richmond hill rd. which has no interchange with 520, it may have worked it there was an interchange for the property not at Richmond hill but a new overpass and interchange with Career dr exit 6 allowing direct interstate access for the shopping center as well Augusta tech's main campus. Other than the areas along the interstate South Augusta's only undeveloped land along a major road is the land at the intersection of Windsor spring and Tobacco roads every other road has housing along them. Unless you were to venture out as far as Willisforeman rd. to develop which to many residents of South Augusta is farther away than west Augusta.

I agree. I just feel that there is no unnecessary reporting of a crime. Some folks want to be informed of their surroundings. Yes there has been trouble at the AM. Never said there wasn't any. Still remember reading about the dude shooting at his girlfriend or somebody in the parking lot. And lots not forget the AM made national headlines when the guy drove his jeep through the doors. There are many reasons we can come up with to why is South Augusta not developing as fast as its neighbors. All I'm pointing out is the obvious. South Augusta lags behind some of the other areas in the city or metro. That's all. I know it will not be that way forever. But as of today, it is.

I wanted to make sure, and it's been confirmed Windsor Jewelers is opening at the Top Notch(car wash across from Augusta mall) property on Wrightsboro rd..
Blanchard & Calhoun Commercial | News | Top Notch Car Wash Sells

Expect to hear additional details concerning the Discovery Plaza(former Fort Discovery), Regal Village theatre in the Augusta West Plaza(purchased earlier this year), leasing of the old Famous Daves on Washington rd, the tenants going in the two 4k sq. ft. buildings infront of the Kroger at Washington/Alexander, the ground breaking for the Cookout at 1801 Walton Way near Harrisburg, tenants for the 13 acre shopping center on Gordon Hwy in Southwest Augusta near Grovetown, tenants for the 10k sq. ft. Shoppes at Dyess Park behind Zaxybs on Madeline/Jimmie Dyess, exact date for the Ruby Tuesday on Bobby Jones closing and turning into Marlin & Rays(seafood), and some other announcements in the future.

The big three(Village at Riverwatch, Wheeler Town Park, 25 acre shopping center on Jimmie Dyess near Zaxbys) probably have to wait to next year(in terms of commercial development), but you never know really..

Tapas bar, TBonz among new dining options in Columbia County

Plans to open a cigar lounge and tapas restaurant in Evans didn’t come about overnight for friends David Beerman and Richard Hudson.

Frequenters of smoke shops in the area, the two casually discussed what they would do if they were to open a similar establishment. From there, the talk evolved to adding a restaurant.
Fast forward a year and they are working feverishly to have both The Retreat and The Smoker’s Retreat open by mid-August.
A Japanese hibachi and sushi restaurant has also opened a second Evans location.

Toki Japanese Steakhouse now serves customers at 4534 Washington Road, just past Ace Hardware.

Another dining option coming to the county is an Applebee’s at the Gateway shopping center near Grovetown, county Development Services Director Richard Harmon confirmed.

NEW BUSINESS OPENING IN MIDTOWN AUGUSTA | Buzz On Biz

Gypsey Pearl will open in the Midtown area on Kings Way(off Central Avenue)..

Kings Way, Monte Sano, and the Central Avenue part of Summerville/Midtown can resemble Virginia Highlands in Atlanta over the new few years.. All they have to do is expand First Thursday, develop the fire station property on Central Avenue, and create 1 to 2 additional events twice per month(Saturday is a nice day to start things off)... Then focus on bringing new amenities along Central Avenue east of Hickman rd and Wrightsboro rd east of Highland Avenue....
