Okay. The one in Greenville is pretty impressive, it's huge. I'm not sure if that's the standard size or not.

A new seafood restaurant has opened in Aiken.

Off Da Chain Seafood & Mo, a venture that had been in the works for the restaurant’s owner Windell Davis for the last 12 years, officially launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, the Aiken Standard reported.

The restaurant is located at 615 Laurens St. N.W.

Aiken Mayor Rick Osborn, Department of Public Safety Chief Charles Barranco and Greater Aiken Chamber of Commerce President and CEO J. David Jameson were all present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to the report.

The restaurant serves shrimp, scallops, crab legs, pork chops and chicken wings, among other things.

Davis said the restaurant is characterized by “friendly people, good food and affordable prices.”

Off Da Chain is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday.

The recent groundbreaking ceremony for the post’s $50 million Gate 6 access road was an upbeat event, but it highlighted a slightly inconvenient truth: the shiny new gateway open by summer 2020 will have no mainline link to I-20 – it begins and ends at Gordon Highway in a “T” intersection.

As the main entrance to the National Security Administration-Army Cyber Command complex, it probably should have a straight shot to the interstate. And it probably will.

“Very definitely,” says Don Grantham, Augusta’s representative on the Georgia Department of Transportation board. “There is some serious thought being given to it.”

Grantham said there have been no formal studies conducted on the path that a Gate 6-to-I-20 corridor would follow, but he acknowledged the new interchange would likely fall somewhere in the middle of the seven-mile stretch between Columbia County’s first two exits (or final two exits, depending on your perspective).

“It’s going to have to be in there somewhere,” said Grantham, noting Exit 183 is too far west to be convenient while Exit 190 already directs traffic toward Gate 1.

I’m no engineer, but a quick look at aerial images tells me the most logical interchange for a Gate 6 north-south connector would be at one of the existing overpasses: Baker Place Road and Louisville Road, the latter of those having the best straight-line trajectory to the installation’s west side.

The new interchange has been the subject of quiet conversation between state, local and federal transportation officials since the Gate 6 concept was drawn up a few years ago. But the decibel volume is sure to increase along with the traffic volume at what will be the largest and busiest of the installation’s three full-time access points (Gates 1 and 5 being the other two).

“I think there’s room for good dialogue and conversation, because there is going to be some serious funding involved,” Grantham said.

Expect the new interchange to be on the wish list when it comes time to discussing projects in Transportation Investment Act “Part 2.” Local sales tax dollars likely would be used to leverage state and federal funding for a connection to Fort Gordon through Columbia County.

And that’s somewhat ironic considering Columbia County voters said “nay” to TIA in 2012. I doubt that will happen again, given the growth Army Cyber is pushing toward the county. Army surveys show the county is the destination of choice for more than two-thirds of cyber soldiers and employees.

Baker Place makes sense but they might want to relocate the weigh station out towards where Louisville Rd is.

Not a lot of large employers near downtown Aiken, and they mostly roll up the streets downtown by 5-6PM (except for the Alley and Pizza Joint). Perhaps it will be a selling point for young or mid-early career professional hires at SRS. Love what Greenville has done with some of their old mills in this regard, and of course Enterprise Mill in Augusta.

Columbia has done something like that with a couple of mills too. And then one was turned into the state museum. One was lofts, the Inn at USC I think. And then Olympia and Granby Mills are apartments.
