Leaders plan for traffic improvements to support Fort Gordon growth | The Augusta Chronicle

I have been planning an entrance for Fort Gordon with my interstate idea for the longest. It's amazing how these things are naturally happening. In Virginia Interstate 95 runs through MCB Quantico.

https://www.google.com/maps/preview/...4618,12z?hl=en

Interstate 63: Will utilize the existing I-520 corridor through east Augusta, the same corridor will be upgraded to 6 lanes.

Interstate 163 (Downtown Connector): Connects I-63 with downtown Augusta, 10 lanes .

Gordon Hwy: This corridor would be upgraded to fully limited access from Deans Bridge to I-63 in North Augusta, 8 lanes.

Riverwatch Parkway: This corridor would be widened to 6 lanes from Bastion Road in Martinez to downtown Augusta.

Aiken Connector: Connects the city of Aiken to South Augusta and Augusta Regional Airport as well as I-63, 4 lanes.

Interstate 463: The outer ring beltway around Augusta. The road is used to further connect the metro area. The road will be 4 to 6 lanes in width and provide a level of connectivity that currently does not exist with I-520.
This road will connect every major road in the MSA with one. To help in cost the entire interstate will be tolled.

Hwy 1, Deans Bridge Wrens Connector: Designed for future growth of the Blythe, Wrens and southwestern Richmond County area.

I wonder with all this growth coming will GDOT finally begin the widening of I-20 to Thomson sooner. With all the growth coming to West Augusta and CC it will be needed. Also another interchange needs to be built at I-20 and Louisville Road. BTW, in the article they discussed the possibility of creating a more direct route between Washington Road and Fort Gordon. I wonder what roads would have to be widened to achieve that?

It would be nice if GDOT was proactive and widened I-20 to 8 lanes instead of four like NCDOT does in North Carolina.

Several years ago I remember a discussion about an interchange at Louisville Rd being built. I think that that will be a reality soon.

I was wondering the same thing about the direct route from Washington Rd. In a way you have Bel-Air Rd which turns into Jimmy Dyess which is a pretty straight shot but is very congested during rush hours. I'm not sure which part of Washington Rd. they want to connect to Fort Gordon.

I agree, go ahead and add 2 more lanes on each side especially as you get closer to the metro. They should have done this with 520. I predict in 10 years they will be widening 520 yet again.

Yea, it would be nice if GDOT did do that. I know in the last long range transportation plan for Augusta, there was talk of putting HOV lanes on I-20 between Louisville Road and Riverwatch Parkway. Also I think the earliest the I-20 widening will begin is 2018. I could be wrong though.

There are still plans for HOV lanes on I-20.
