Hello,

Do I need to have a license or permit for my monitored house alarm? When I had it installed a year or so ago, the installer didn't mention anything about it.

However, a co-worker just moved into a house nearby, installed an alarm, and was told he had to get one. We live in the 78739 zip code. Anyone know for sure?

We live just north of you in Legen Oaks, yes, If you are in the City limits you do need to have an alarm permit. We did not know that and after the police got called out by a false alarm set off by our pet sitter, they sent us a notice that we were being fined for not having a permit, but if we obtained a permit they would wave the fine. Which we did. We too were not advised by the alarm company who activated the existing alarm system in the house we bought that we needed a permit in the City of Austin.

It appears if you are in Williamson or Travis County you need a permit, not just in the Austin City Limits. That website says:

Quote:
City of Austin Penalties for Operating an Alarm System Without a Permit

$200 for each response to a non-permitted location.
Operator is subject to Class C misdemeanor charges.

The City of Austin, Travis and Williamson Counties all have adopted laws that regulate the operation of alarm systems. The City of Austin requires an alarm permit for each residence or business that operates an alarm system.

Wow, I'm surprised the company didn't mention the permit as mine even gave me a copy of the permit form. It just have been just "say whatever to get the sale and only that" syndrome or someone who wasn't experienced.

Thank you CptnRn.

The funny thing is that my co-worker and I have the same installer (Sloan Security). I found out a little while ago that my co-worker actually was given a copy of the permit. Strange.
