Does anyone know of a good (trustworthy + knowledgeable) independent mechanic who specializes in Mercedes?
In and around Austin is preferable, but I will commute ~30min to someone good.

I stick to the dealer on my Mercedes. Learn from my mistake: A non-Mercedes mechanic deactivated my vehicle's computer to clear an error message related to the service being performed. It took multiple mechanics HOURS to figure out how to reactive the computer. I was seriously concerned that it had been fried. I almost had the vehicle towed to the dealer. Apples-to-apples, the cost turned out to be comparable to the dealer. And the warning light was still on.... Talk to Martha Howard in Mercedes Service before you decide.

Ben's Workshop on 5th is great. I've found the dealer to be very helpful and they do give great service, but at great cost.

I used to think that about dealers. But I have price compared multiple services on my Mercedes: breaks, tires, front alignment, etc. The dealer was repeatedly comparable to the places I found on networking sites like this. In fact, I have found Mercedes to be generous. When another place has seemed less expensive (like the experience above), it usually turns out that certain aspects of the service were not included in the initial estimate.

When you factor peace of mind, the dealer is a better deal. They want repeat customers. And if I sell my vehicle, the buyer will know that the vehicle has been maintained by Mercedes and will have detailed information on the vehicle's maintenance history.

If you use a reputable mechanic, they'll have the same records. Ben's is at least 25% cheaper on the scheduled maintenance- I know that for a fact. But we all do what we think is the best. And yes, they are very nice.

Ben's is great. There is also a good place on Lamar a couple blocks north of 6th.
