read an article in Kiplinger financial magazine that has Austin in the #1 spot for being at the front of innovation and job growth...I work in the I/T field and wanted to see if anyone can give some insight into the job market for I/T professionals in any I/T category...thanks!!

I think the article exagerrates the job growth in Austin. On a percentage basis it is probably relatively good. But cities like Houston are just so much larger.

For IT jobs, I have said it before here that it depends greatly on what kind of IT you are talking about.

If you talking about system and network admins, I think Austin is at best an average market. Those are relatively common skills and we don't have lots of companies with 1000s of servers that need to be managed.

If you are a Java programmer, we have more than enough of those.

If you are a talented senior level programmer, then things get interesting. There are software companies almost always looking for special people.

My company just lost a guy - because he was hired for a very nice paying (>$100K) job elsewhere.

Thanks for the update, Hoffdano...I work primarily in Unix and SAP systems...I'm no pro but I can figure my way around...mostly I've worked in the Operations side of I/T since I got in this field in '91...
