Father and adult son visiting Austin (and Texas) for first time in mid-August. We know the weather will suck. Seeking ideas on what to see for sure and where to stay (area or specific hotels).

Oh my goodness. There is so much to see and do. What is your price point for hotels. I would think you would want to stay central. If you want a great, local (not chain), hotel for a bargain I would recommend the Hotel Allandale on Anderson Ln. It is centrally located and has a great complementary hot breakfast. Also, it is a bit unique because it used to be an apartment complex. They even offer bike rentals, which I think is a cool feature.
As far as what to do, it depends on what kinds of activities you and your son typically enjoy. If you post back with more detail about what you're looking for, I'll do my best to recommend some activities and things to do.

Will you be driving in or renting a car at all? I think which area you stay in would be highly dependent on that.
