My husbands supervisor is coming to TX for a visit. What are some good restaurants, not chain that you guys can recommend?

He's staying at a hotel near the airport so anywhere in that vicinity would be good.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The Landing Strip! It's near the airport, and the radio ads say they have a five-star kitchen!

Ok. That made me laugh.
Will he have access to a car?

Too funny. I didn't even know about the Landing Strip until I watched Friday Night Lights.

Neighborhoods close to the Airport tend to be pretty seedy.

I recommend two alternatives, assuming you don't want to be too extravagant, or the boss may think he is paying you too much.

1. Conservative: Take Riverside Drive from the airport do downtown Austin, it is a short direct trip. Continue on Riverside Drive to S. 1st Street, turn North and park in the Austin City Hall underground parking garage. It is usually free or very cheap to park there. Walk two blocks NE to Cantina Laredo restaurant for some excellent mexican food, order the fresh guacamole that is made at your table. If you have time before or after dining, stroll another block East to Congress Avenue and stroll up and down the Avenue with the State Capital Building at the North end. All of this will give the Boss a feel for what a thriving modern City Austin is.

2. Moderate: if you want a little more adventure and entertainment. Take Riverside Drive from the airport do downtown Austin. Park in the parking garage at the SE corner of 5th and Red River, it is not expensive. From there you can cross the street to the NW corner and dine at Carmelo's Italian Restaurant, or walk another block North, past Esther's Follies, to 6th Street and dine at any of the many excellent options it offers.

If you are up for a longer walk on 6th Street, walk 4 blocks West to the Historic Driskill Hotel. http://www.driskillhotel.com/ If you go up the monumental stairs to the Bar you can have drinks and a light bar menu dinner at reasonable prices in one of the oldest and very TEXAN environments downtown. These short strolls down 6th Street will leave your boss with a vibrant impression of the diversity and vitality of the City. There are numerous music clubs along 6th Street if he is inclined to look for more excitement.

After drinking/dining at the Driskill or other establishments, walk back down 6th street to Esther's Follies, to take in a show at this cabaret, it is a very fun, funky, comedy, magic show, with some adult humor, this is an old Austin favorite that your boss is bound to enjoy if he is not too stuffy. Note the stage backs on 6th street windows, so people walking down the street are often drawn into the performance. Laughter is a great medicine, and if your boss enjoy's this show as most people do, he will leave feeling good and that could reflect on you as the hosts of his special night in Austin.

Feel free to DM me with questions if you have any.

All I could think of was Eastside Cafe or Ironworks BBQ.

But Captain Ron's suggestions are great--even gives the parking garage locales!

You are welcome.

Here are some other threads talking about good restaurants downtown.

Other good places to eat around Austin:

If you think the supervisor might like to try out Texas Barbeque, Lamberts is right next to City Hall in the old historic 1893 Schneider Building Lamberts Downtown Barbecue

This link below talks about the history of the "Guy Town" area and half way down the page the history of the Schneider Building. Early settlers around the Austin area would come into down for provisions and camp out in the wagon yard stockade around the Schneider Building. Indian attacks were still common then.
City of Austin - History of Guy Town - Austin City Hall

Quote:
At the turn of the century, the neighborhood where Austin City Hall currently resides was one of Austin's most notorious neighborhoods, known as "Guy Town," a center for prostitution, gambling and saloons. The rich history of this red light district was explored during the comprehensive archeological studies conducted in the area before construction of the new City Hall building. The studies focused on the downtown area between Guadalupe and Colorado Streets and W. First and Fifth Streets.

You might also consider Moonshine, which is a great place by the convention center; it's on the eastermost side of DT, so it's not too bad of a drive from the airport.
Moonshine® Restaurant Patio Bar and Grill :: Downtown Austin Texas Dining

However, I kinda like CptRn's ideas because they generally are in areas where one would get to see a little of the downtown Austin activity. Especially Lambert's, since it's BBQ too. I'd also add these possibilities along similar lines (get to walk downtown a bit):

La Condesa -
LA CONDESA

Garrido's (bottom of the 360 condo building)
Garrido's Restaurant, Austin Texas

Z-Tejas (West 6th street location)
Z'Tejas (http://www.ztejas.com/z-tejas-6-street.html - broken link)

For more upscale/steaks ($$$), maybe try:

Roaring Fork on Congress (right by the Paramount theatre, nice streetscape):
Welcome to Eddie V's
