I am looking to buy a house in austin or the surrounding area for under $200K. We want a starter home with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. Is this possible and still be in a decent neighborhood to raise a family? I have been looking in the west buda area and maybe Cedar Park but is there anywhere within the city limits? I think my price point is to low for west mopac/sederna and Shady Hollow. What about Bauerle Ranch - Olympic Heights? I heard there has been some crime in Olympic Heights. Thanks in advance.

I bought a 3/2 house (1233 sq ft) in Round Rock in 2008 for $106,000.

You may want to look outside of Austin for better prices.

There are a ton

There is a 1500 sq ft one in lakewood at 2222 and 360 which is a great location.

There is one on henge drive that is 1450 sq ft which feeds into kathy caraway/canyon vista/westwood (barrington oaks subdivision)

North of anderson mill road there are a ton and they feed into anderson mill/grisham/westwood

There is one that is 2400 sq ft, .25 acres. There are many in the 160K range

Sendera has several on the market right now and may be able to get one under 200. My neighbors house here sold for under 200! Great neighborhood!

You could get a condo in Onion Creek for less than 200K:

Houses? Probably not.

Which is too bad, but they are opening a new western expansion of OH in the Baranoff Elem. area (at a steep increase of price) and connecting Bauerle Ranch, Hillcrest and OH as a result. Bauerle Ranch has very little crime, and Rancho Alto across Frate Barker has little crime, but OH seems to have had a recent increase. The problem may be the pricepoint, as some houses there are as small as 1300 sf for less than 150K in some cases. It may be a popular area, but when someone can buy in Olympic Heights for the same price as they could in Del Valle...you get the picture. Rancho Alto is next door, and seems untouched. Houses there go for 170K-240K. The smallest houses are about 1500sf I believe.

Wells Branch, just East of Mopac has several under $200k. I'm about to list one for about $140k.

What's with all the ghetto pricing? When I moved here in 2008, the only (liveable) houses for less than 200K were east of 35, now it seems that everything east of Mopac is the same pricepoint.

It depends on what you're looking for. The OP said starter home. The homes in Wells Branch are mostly 1200-1500 sqft and built in the early 80's. If you were looking for something larger and newer than that, then you would have to go further east... or Cedar Park, Round Rock, Buda, or Kyle...
