The family and I are taking a vacation this spring to the great state of Texas! What would make Austin a better vacation than say going to Houston or Dallas. If we go to Austin we plan on taking a day to go to San Antonio too. So why Austin?

1. The people
2. The wineries
3. The relative compactness and accessibilty of the town
4. The scenery
5. The highland lakes
6. The small towns surrounding Austin, like Fredericksburg, Gruene, Wimberley, are tourist attractions in their own rights.
7. The Comal and Guadalupe rivers
8. The live music is pervasive
9. The greater likelihood that a festival will be happening while you are in town.
10. South Austin

Our trailer eateries are ridiculously good, also. The gratuitous visit to Gourdoughs, Odd Duck, and Torchy's is a must. My favorite places are south of town as well: Schlitterbahn (top waterpark in the nation 10 years running), Natural Bridge Caverns - the caves and wildlife tours... If you want to vacation here in the future, this town is been a top attention getter of investors and developers recently. We will have a brand new Schlitterbahn built in the Austin metro, the only F1 track in the US, and a throuroughbred horse track as well. These are all coming within the next 2-3 years. Good times are ahead.

That's your reason right there. San Antonio has more for tourists in a more manageable area than DFW or Houston, that's why it is the most popular tourist destination in Texas. So if you go to Austin, you can go to SA too, and all the little lake towns/German (Fredericksburg, New Braunfels) towns/rivers (tubing, kayaking)/swimming holes (Hamilton Pool, Barton Springs) in the Central Texas area. You've got a variety of festivals, too, especially in the fall and spring. Can't beat those two cities for a vacation in Texas... The only drawback is the lack of museums, IMO. Houston is best for that, but Ft Worth is also good.

What would be appealing about Houston or Dallas? They're all very different places... So if you have an idea of what you want to do, it would help your decision.

Austin is a sleeply little midsized town. Im not sure there is anything special here for a family looking to "see sights". San antonio is a much better tourist town.

houston or dfw would require lots of driving while here we're still pretty compact -- much more family oriented -- hotel rates should be more competitive here than in san antonio - we've got water (lady bird lake/zilker park as well as lake austin), caves, museums, fine food, hills/hike bike trails, baseball (ut or round rock express), -- course, dallas has jerry's world and houston has reliant stadium and a quick run to the beach -- we've got a lot to see and do -- austin is about participation!

Don't forget the Austin Zoo, the San Antonio Zoo, Six Flags, & Sea World.

There is also the Medina Hof winery in Bryan on Hwy 21.

Oh! And don't forget the scenic drives thru the the Hill Country. The drive from Kerrville to Fredericksburg on Hwy 16 is just georgeous!!

There's also the LBJ Ranch, the LBJ Library at UT, the State History Museum (IMHO, AWESOME!), visiting the state capital building, and at least ONE event going on every day somewhere in the city...

All just to name a few...
