I know many gay families in Austin who are raising children but they don't all live in the same place! French Place, Travis Heights, east Austin, and even Davenport Ranch!!

There is no gaybor here, there are gay folks everywhere in Austin but no where in Austin where gay folks are everywhere! Does that make sense?

good luck!

The question is sort of like asking what neighborhood all the Democrats (or Republicans) live in. Or which neighborhood will only have dog owners living in it. Or something similar.

As has been said, Austin isn't like that. Gays don't live in their own ghetto - they're part of the population just like everybody else.

Isn't that how it's supposed to be?

I would really avoid Texas if you are gay. It is probably one of the most anti-gay states in the nation and many gay hate crimes have occured here. I GUESS if you MUST live in Texas, head to central Austin and don't venture out of the area too much. I believe there is a small, but influential gay population downtown, and in central Austin. BTW, the gay communities are FAR larger in Dallas and Houston.

We want to kiss goodbye on the front porch and not be the only ones doing it. We want to see rainbow flags everywhere. We want our kids to not feel like such a minority.

Can anyone recommend some areas?

Thanks!

You would be fine in most areas of Central Austin, but you won't see rainbow flags everywhere. I would check out the Montrose area in Houston if you're looking for a higher concentration of gay families in a particular area.

I have been wondering for some time why you keep saying Austin is not gay-friendly when Austin is regularly decribed by both C-D people and national publications as a gay friendly city.

Advocate magazine, the best known gay-centric monthly includes Austin in the 10 "Gayest Cities" of the US. I suppose someone could choose to rely on you for an assessment of gay-friendliness for Austin. Or a magazine who's readers are gay and are interested in good places to live.

I think, eepstein, that the real issue is that you don't want gay people to move here. So you make up stories about how anti-gay Austin is.

Austin isn't unfriendly towards gays, but there are no gayborhoods around here. Montrose in Houston would be closer to what you originally asked for and lots of rainbow flags flying there as well. Even out here in Hutto there are gay couples (male and female).

I know of 4 lesbian households in my neighborhood (including me), but none of us have rainbow flags flying outside of our homes or anything - we all just blend in just fine with our open-minded and nice neighbors without having to show our "pride" about who we are and who we sleep with...

I never said Austin proper was anti-gay....i said Texas is anti-gay which is absolutely true. As I said, if I were a gay person, I probably would wish to be in a little more "accepting" part of the country. Sure, parts of central austin, MAY be accepting, but what happens when you venture to the suburbs!!??

Gee, gay friendly city?? Part of that 25 mil media budget I believe.

What happens when you venture to the suburbs? Not a whole lot, based on what the gay couples and families I know say. They move here from other parts of the country expecting the stereotype that eepstein's putting out there and are amazed and delighted at what they really find. Go figure.

That doesn't count the gay folks on C-D who live in the Austin area and have dispelled that particular idea repeatedly.
