Hi All - I will be transferring within my company over the next couple of months to Austin. I am 27, male and just looking for some overall advice regarding just about anything. My office is on W. Parmer Lane and I really want to live in the downtown area so I can walk/bus to the nightlife. How will my commute be going out of downtown in the am and into it in the pm? betetr or worse than suburbs?

Any other areas to recommend in DT area? It needs to be fairly close - I would walk 20 minutes or so.

I will post more specifics but was hoping just for some general info. I have done a decent amount of research but I think it's best coming from those who live there now!

P.S. - will be down Thursday the 5th of July until the following Friday.

Be well...

your commute anywhere during rush hour will have traffic, although you will have a little less going out of downtown then you would going into. You coming from Boston and dealing with the "Big Dig" it shouldn't be to hard. I have a client that is moving here from Boston sometime in August and he has been down to visit several times. He said relative to Boston it's not bad and the distances are shorter. PM will be worse than AM but hey, you'll be living downtown so you'll have something to look forward to at the end of your commute.

Dont' rule out areas where you can combine a walk with a short bus ride. ie.e - if you were north of UT up in the North Central Austin area your commute to Parmer would be much quicker, but you'd also easy walking access to bus routes that take you downtown.
