What time does it start? I'm from San Antonio and need to go to Round Rock, say I leave my house at 5 AM. Without traffic, I would be in Round Rock at 7 AM, but how likely is this?

What is the morning rush hour like? Just curious, thanks, y'all! You have a great city, a close family member may be moving there!

What part of SA? I've done that drive from the NE side (35/OConnor-ish) at pretty much that exact time and you'll end up in RR ~6:45 barring accidents (like the big truck one over night in RR). Worst case scenario is you can always take the toll road and by pass the traffic...

All right, thank you! That's really helpful!

So I guess I just have to hope for the best and wish that there won't be any crazy accidents involving semis. Whooop-tee-doo!

I wouldn't think twice and I'd take the toll road. It is WELL WORTH the few dollars you'll spend to avoid Austin traffic!

You can now check the traffic flow on Google Maps before you leave, to see if there are already any problems. A problem could develop later, but at least you would know what the flow is like before you leave.

Google Maps click on the white box labeled "Traffic" in the top R edge of the map.

THIS is the correct answer. Otherwise you WILL be in stop & go traffic on south I-35 coming in to Austin.

The 45 tollway goes east from Cabela's (by Buda) for about 6 miles & flows into Texas 130 tollway. It's very light traffic all the way to the 45 tollway in Round Rock.

No aggravation at all, a few minutes quicker, and is well worth the $5 or so in tolls.

CptnRn - is there ever NOT a problem during rush hour on I35 (or Mopac, for that matter!)??

I have to be on East Riverside by 8am on Friday, and I live on Brushy Creek Road in Cedar Park. It's still three days away, but I'm already dreading it! At least it may be a bit cooler so I can sit in my car and read if I get there ultra-early to avoid the traffic.

Even at 6, 6:30am? 7am, okay...

As long as you get past Riverside by 6:30, I'd think you'd be fine with traffic the rest of the way. But, as I said initially and as the others have said, the toll road gets you there for sure, but I always felt as long as I was through downtown by 6:30 I was fine.

Actually, the troll road ... er ... toll road is the exit immediately after the FM 1327 exit. And if ya goof & take the FM 1327 exit, you'll be able to get on the toll road at the light. Just stay in the far right lane & the toll road begins almost as soon as you turn at the light.

Also, make sure you get into the far right lane on 35 well before Cabela's (exit 221) as there is narrowed lanes with no lane shifts allowed between exit 221 & the toll road exit due to road construction. (Alledgedly not allowed... I see it happen all the time on my way home along with the wrecks caused by people being surprised by the lane shift!)

I work on 35 about halfway between Buda & Kyle & drive that stretch of the interstate daily. Northbound traffic thru Buda/Kyle doesn't get all that heavy around 6 am - 7:30 am until you get up to Slaughter Ln & then it's stop & go all the way thru downtown the rest of the morning.

The troll roads are your best bet ... I see maybe 10 cars on them at 7 am going north ... southbouth is even emptier!

(Can't help calling 'em troll roads ... I read too much Piers Anthony! )
