Do any of you know if there's a place in Austin where they sell used clothing by the pound? There's dozens of these places in the border, but I can't seem to find anyting like this around here. They usually look like warehouses, so you mostly find out about them thru word of mouth but I don't know anyone in town.

I am a regular in the thrift stores around town, and have been to the Blue Hanger. Any ideas? Do you think I'll have better luck in San Antonio? I really don't want to make a 4-hour drive to save myself $30.

AFAIK there are no rag houses in the Austin area. The closest one is in Houston and there are several in the valley as you mentioned.

Never heard of that. Are there actually places that sell clothing by the pound?

I don't know why anyone would want clothing by the pound. Usually it's either all rags, or clothes not even the thrift stores could sell and they usually ship it all out to Third World countries.

Yes, generally it's vintage clothing sellers from all over the world who pick through things to resell.

Not at all. Thrift store bales are only a small fraction of what they have. If you know the right places, the right people and what to look for, it can be rather lucrative (although disgusting and backbreaking!) Japanese and European dealers are a huge market for these places.

Savers on Burnet Rd has their $1.00 tag sales every Thursday. Every piece with the tag color for that week is $1.00. That's probably the closest you'll get to what you are looking for.

Macklemore would probably be happy with Savers. I've gotten some great deals there ($10 for a George Foreman Grill!), but I don't think they sell anything by the pound.

Oh well. Time to pop some tags!

My husband says there is a salvation army store that sells clothing by the pound. That may be the Blue Hangar though.
