Shrub's family moved to Texas when he was just short of 2-yo and he was raised in Texas... Midland and Houston, specifically.

George Sr. married Barbara in December, 1944... he was honorably discharged from the US Navy in September, 1945 and enrolled at Yale... George Jr. was born July, 1946 in New Haven... George Sr. graduated Yale in 1948 and immediately moved to Midland, TX to start work for Dresser Industries, an oil exploration company.

Of Shrub's siblings... Robin (1949) (who died when she was 3-yo from leukemia) was born in Compton, CA, and Jeb (1953), Neil (1955), Marvin (1956) and Dorothy (1959) were all born in Midland, TX too.

Best,
TX-Griff
I thought I was right in calling Texas his home state!

Speaking of articles... check out Richard Florida, an economist and urban studies theorist and author of Rise of the Creative Class... Cities and the Creative Class... and The Flight of the Creative Class.

Florida consistently uses Austin as an example of urban regeneration 'done right' (according to his theories) and not relying on old-style growth factors:
Quote:
Florida's theory asserts that metropolitan regions with high concentrations of high-tech workers, artists, musicians, gay men, and a group he describes as "high bohemians", correlate with a higher level of economic development. Florida posits the theory that the Creative Class fosters an open, dynamic, personal and professional environment. This environment, in turn, attracts more creative people, as well as businesses and capital. He suggests that attracting and retaining high-quality talent, versus a singular focus on infrastructure projects such as sports stadiums, iconic buildings, and shopping centers, would be a better primary use of a city's regeneration resources for long-term prosperity. [emphasis mine]

And in a Fast Comapny article Where Are You On The Talent Map? Florida says:
Quote:
Using focus groups, interviews, and an eclectic array of demographic data, Florida is plotting the sociological factors that enable cities to attract human capital. Chief among his findings: In an insecure, temporary, free-agent-dominated world, the crusaders of the new economy increasingly take their professional identities from where they live, rather than from where they work. "Not so long ago you'd meet a guy on a plane, ask him what he does, and he'd tell you that he's a software programmer at Trilogy," says Florida. "Now it's, 'I write code and live in Austin.' "[emphasis mine]

Whether Florida is observing a phenomena that "fell together" for Austin (and a select few other cities, as well... Atlanta, Boston, Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC are included as "talent bases" in Florida's studies) or whether he's driving the phenomena is probably a moot point... it's his identification/labeling of the specific points of future, POSITIVE (for all... the land, the residents, the businesses, etc.) urban growth that fascinate me.

TX Griff

ps: okay, I give up... what's the secret to getting the URLs to post as a hyperlink? It must be something in my settings, but I don't know what... ~~sigh~~

Well, go download clips of the Ann Richards, George W. Bush gubernatorial debate. His down home Texas drawl is noticeably absent. That didn't develop until his image consultants were done with him, years later.
