I am considering a move to Austin, Portland or Chicago. And while I posted detailed information, I am unsure of life in Austin (as I have been to Portland and Chicago)

What is public transportation like? How easy would it be too find a roomate/ retail (and or temp work) in a two month time period? What is the overall feel or Austin?

My sister lives in nearby Houston, and it would be nice to have her close. But, my few trips to Houston I figured it wasn't for me.

You can rely on public transportation in Austin if you plan carefully where you will live and work. There are lots of students here so there is probably always a demand for roommates. I have no idea how long it takes to find retail or temp work. Again since there are lots of students there is probably a lot of competition for those jobs. Assuming you can find work in only two months is possibly a risky assumption anywhere these days. There are lots of people moving to Austin to get out of worse situations in other states, and no over abundance of jobs here, so I can't say anything optimistic in that regard. Texas also has a large, uneducated, minority population that are in competition for many of the lower paying jobs.

In spite of all that, the overall feel of Austin in my opinion is an easy-going, relaxed, casual lifestyle. Unless you are unemployed and can't find a job, then it probably feels pretty desperate.

a.) Gala Apples (Austin)
b.) Golden Delicious Apples (Portland)
c.) Vietnamese Pho (Chicago)

Did I make myself clear?

Austin's PT is terrible compared to these cities. I love it here but that's a major shortcoming that the city is still trying to sort out.

Do yourself a favor and visit Austin. You will know after 4-5 days whether or not it's a good fit.

Good luck!
