they have no freewheel. the bikes cannot stop, you cannot break. you can pedal backwords to acheive i guess a form of breaking.

also their are no gears
so when going up or down hills to help you.

you can coast, and they are usually very very light, and their frames are often skinny. you can go really really fast on fixed gears though, and turn corners really fast, but unless you are good you will likely crash, since you cant really break real fast and change gears on different inclines

they are fun to ride for the most part

Don't those one-speed bikes have coaster brakes? At least the ones the hipsters tool around town in. I can see the draw, they are old-school, yet they bought it new.

Why do they have to ruin everything? I went to a bar tonight, that was probably a trendy place for a while now, but it was my first time and I had no idea. Either way, they were having a Christmas party, it was full of people 50+ years old. I felt super comfy there. Despite me being much younger, it's what I grew up around. But then all the hipsters came in and were loud and obtrusive and just made it a real uptight scene. Had a good time regardless, but they can be difficult to block out.

I got no problem with 'em. Those who dress like that and actually are pursuing something (art, a business, music), that's cool. They're doing their own thing. For many it's all about looking cool.

They are no more ridiculous than say, soccer moms, who are truly ridiculous.

I like your comment about ironically poor vs. actually poor.

But if they are no more ridiculous than soccer moms, who you say are truly ridiculous, aren't the looking cool hipsters also truly ridiculous?

Why BTW, are soccer moms ridiculous? They haul their kids all over town to activities like soccer, either in a minivan or Tahoe. If the kids in fact are playing soccer that's good considering the alternative could be watching TV.

I guess I'm just too old to be bothered by any particular 'type'. Hipsters don't bother me, nor do soccer moms. Wait, strident, vegan, communists sometimes get on my nerves so maybe my earlier statement isn't that accurate.

I think the only category of people that annoy me are bandwagon people.

Bandwagon UT fans (where are they now?)....bandwagon hipsters....fake hip hop kids.....frat kids with cheap colored frame sunglasses....and the like.

I think I need to visit Austin and see for myself. Where are the hipster hangouts besides Rio Rita? How long have hipsters been around now?

We often follow vegan recipes and order vegan dishes due to a family member's food allergies. Not milk, etc, but eggs are bad news for this child. Just saying that, for some, it isn't a choice. Not that going vegan out of choice is wrong, because it isn't. It doesn't affect anyone at all.
