Hmm...I haven't seen anyone yet (soccer moms, artists, musicians, politicians, CEOs, blue collar workers, geeks, athletes etc...) that doesn't deserve some occasional scorn. Everyone is ridiculous sometimes. It's called being human. Thankfully we are not all the same.

NOBODY has all of the correct answers. Those who think they do are the ones not to be trusted.

A hipster is someone who takes a liking to their music (and music they make) and hates everything else, especially mainstream music. We also migrate to other hipsters, befriending them and taking over bars making it a hipstertown. We wear skinny jeans, bandshirts, sometimes leather or jean jackets, and most certainly, wear blank rimmed glasses. I like to wear hippie dresses accompanied by black tights and cowboy boots. I also have black leather boots I like to tuck my jeans into as well. I play acoustic guitar, ukulele, drums and piano. I attempt to write deep and profound things and have an opinion about everything. Hipsters also have crazy dirty hair, beards and emo swoops and are tattooed by art of their favorite artists.

I'm a hipster and I live in Boston.

Funny post.

I like to make fun of hipsters - check that, I like to make fun of everybody, including myself My problem lies with bratty, self-rightous behavior (the bike kids irresponsibly riding around town on their fixies are a particular chafe of mine). The current crop of hipsters are rank with smugness, as if all of the GREAT IDEAS on music, art, diet, politics, food production, sustainability etc...have been invented by them in the last five years. Just ridiculous really.

I teach music and audio production classes and some of my lectures touch on music history and the experimental composers of the first half of the 20th century, and students are always surprised to find so many amazing breakthroughs and techniques - things they thought were new - discovered many years ago. It's interesting that in a time of UNPRECEDENTED access to information, people still remain relatively provincial in their thinking.

Anyway, there is a part of me that finds the "costume" mentality of todays hipster quite charming. I have an occasional flare for the dramatic myself I mean, it's pretty harmless and there's no better time to do this than in your teens and 20s. Though well beyond those years, I do still have this urge to wear a kilt with a cowboy hat now and then

Ok, I went to Rio Rita and walked in/out since there was no one at the counter to assist me with my order but I was able to take a quick look at a large group of people sitting in a big circle talking. They were all wearing black, some wore black rim glasses, they all had black messy hair, looked a little scruffy and appeared to be in there mid 20's to mid 30's. They looked like sterotypical artist... come to think of it they looked like beatniks. They looked average or middle class. Is it typical for hipsters to wear "all black" which would make it easy to spot them in a crowd (?)

Thanks Boston and good luck with your musical ambitions... hope they bring you fame and fortune.

I don't know if "all black" is a popular hipster look, but it is a popular look among artists, especially in northeastern cities like Boston and New York.

I like the fact that when I hang out at places like Rio Rita, I'm the only one dressed in boring, mainstream clothes. After all, didn't Huey Lewis and the News say that it's "hip to be square?"

Perhaps there are regional differences in the species.
