Kind of a neat article about an outsider perspective on the GP in Austin, Tavo, etc...

Default a much greener Formula 1

It appears the developers are coming to the table to provide concessions in the form of sustainability to the site and it's events. The Austin city council led by Riley and other environmentalists have a tentative agreement with the F1 promoters agreeing to the strongest environmental standards ever applied to an Austin event.

included in the agreement:

• Limiting parking at the track to 25,000 spots.

• Providing shuttles and off-site parking in Austin for the rest of the 100,000 or so spectators.

• Hiring whichever private shuttle service creates the least air pollution.

• Providing showers at the track for spectators who bicycle to the race.

• Powering at least half the facility's operations through a combination of solar panels, wind turbines or the city's GreenChoice program, which uses renewable energy but is more expensive than the city's standard rate.

• Planting drought-tolerant shrubs.

• Making at least 5 acres that sit in a flood plain available for a community garden.

• Collaborating with the University of Texas' Austin Technology Incubator and other academic institutions to create a research center for environmentally friendly racing.

• Raising $5 million to fund the research.

• Installing low-flow toilets.

• Hosting races for electric cars.

• Hiring minority contractors.

• Hiring locally

and Willie Nelson/Lyle Lovett are playing at the F1 track:

Formula One track to host Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett | Austin Business Journal

“Circuit of The Americas sounds like it will be a world class facility in one of the best places in the world for music,” Lovett said in a statement.

I feel better about it already.

No reason to be bitter. We all need to look past our immediate situations, and realize that this will benefit us all, including your side of town (NW suburbs), as well.

I believe we will start seeing a flood of related announcements now, things like new hotels, new sponsorships, etc. I think a lot of that was waiting on the F1 race to be "official".

It will be exciting to see what those related announcements will be.

Don't worry, it's not too far of a drive from Wells Branch either.
