Hello,

My sister is thinking about moving back to Austin(moved in 98) and a huge issue is that my oldest nephew is a Sophomore wrestler who's on a varsity team in the Chicago area. He's already getting attention from major college programs so it he keeps improving and growing then there is a good chance that he'll get a full ride to a most likely Big 10 school.

So, if she were to relocate to Austin, are there any area schools with decent wrestling programs? I went to high school in the area in the 90s and wrestling was unheard of then. Someone said that Hendrickson in Pflugerville has a program. She may just remain up there until he is done with high school just in case.

Thanks,

Westlake and Bowie are the local powers in wrestling. Both programs regularly get athletes to state medals. A number of them are now in Division I programs.

Vista Ridge must have a good program. Next door neighbors have three sons wrestling and the dad is a coach/admin for one of the associations. Parts of Avery Ranch attend Vista Ridge in the Leander ISD.

Qualifiers for state last year:

Look at Region 4.

Looks like Westlake, Bowie, and Vista Ridge put a lot of wrestlers into the state championships across most of the weight classes.

Wow, I looked at the link and I'm in shock that the Austin area has so many wrestling programs. I don't think any existed when I graduated in 97, maybe only Westlake. Thanks for the info!

There has been a steady growth in interest in wrestling in this area. Perhaps it is due to so many new residents who came from areas where wrestling was common. Schools with the funds to do so have added. Title IX must be considered too.

But I bet in the current budget situation, things will stand still for a while.
