ok. thank you all so much for the info on public transportation. That is very helpful. On that note, what areas close to downtown would you suggest? I have been looking on Craigslist and it seems that, for the most part, all that is available are apartment complexes. We are more interested in an apartment unit inside a house. Is that a possibility? We would also like to be as close as possible to the music scene, as that is the main reason why we are moving there.

Default where to live in A-town

It is not likely you will find much in the way of apartments inside a house unless you are willing to live near UT, and then it would be in an older and much abused house catering to students. Because of UT's huge size, much of central Austin apartment housing is dominated by students. You are more likely to find a duplex and might look for them in areas like Crestview, Allandale, Brykerwoods and some parts of south Austin. Unless it's rush hour you can get downtown to the music venues in 15 minutes from these locations. If it's rush hour, forget it and stay home until the commuters thin out. If you are interested in buying, an incredible number of downtown condos are under construction. Be patient for the next year or so until all the investors who have no plans to live in the units they have purchased begin dumping them at reduced prices.
