Austin's 2010 population was 790,390, up from 656,562 in 2000.

The 2010 metropolitan area population was counted as follows:

Hmmm, it seems that the COA's plan is working! Spend millions of dollars each year in false advertising, and then send the foolish masses who aren't rich, into the faceless suburbs! Keep Austin Weird!

Interesting that the 2009 population that I've seen for Travis is 1,026,158. I have numbers for each year going back to 2000 and the annual gain has always been between 3k and 53k and now we have a loss of almost 2k.

Most of the census bureau's numbers are below the estimates. They also stop counting the census itself on April 1 of the designated census year, so by the time the numbers are calculated and released they are already lower than the actual census itself.

Those 2K aren't lost.....they're just perpetually stuck in traffic on Mopac & I35 & weren't counted.

Does anyone really care how many people live in the Austin area? Take a look at the congestion and near gridlock and then say......TOO MANY PEOPLE LIVE HERE.

Now that's funny.... But badgnome, since the Census is only done every decade, I would imagine that your 2009 number is an estimate, and probably performed by a different body. There's a margin of error in any method, so I wouldn't compare the 2009 estimate to the 2010 census. A recipe for compounded error.

They stop counting the numbers in april. Thats like a whole year of new population growth, so the census is already behind, but really you never can count every single person in Texas, especially a state so big, also I highly doubt they have any idea how many people live here illegally...
