I'm so confused. McNeil, Cedar Park, Leander, Westwood, Vista Ridge, some as-yet-unnamed... and I'm sure I'm missing some.

My husband is being transferred to Cedar Park so we're moving. My kids are only 7th and 8th grade, but I thought it might be easier to focus on the high school they will funnel into.

Are there any to avoid?

I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about it since new schools will open up and your kids could end up at one of them. A coworker has lived in the same house for 20 years. Each of his 3 sons has gone to a different high school...Leander, Cedar Park, and now Vista Ridge.

McNeil HS is in Austin ISD... Westwood HS is in Round Rock ISD.

Cedar Park is solely served by Leander ISD.

All of the Leander ISD high schools --Cedar Park, Leander, Vista Ridge-- are good-great... and as actungpv said, you shouldn't overly rely on current school boundaries for future school boundaries. Cedar Park & Leander are growing at such incredible leaps & bounds new schools are opening every year. When I moved to Leander in 1999 there were two high schools... they're opening their fourth HS (Rouse, next to Wiley MS on CR 271 just off E Crystal Falls Pkwy) next year. Yikes!

Start w/ the Leander ISD web site Leander Independent School District and its Attendance Boundaries info (Attendance Boundaries (broken link)) to see what HS programs are offered "only" at one high school or another and if you care... most curriculum/activities are duplicated at all the high schools, but certain programs are only offered at one HS and students from the other two high schools are bussed in.

For instance, Leander HS is the only Leander ISD HS offering ROTC and the International Baccalaureate Program... Cedar Park and Vista Ridge students who want to participate in either or both are bussed to Leander HS.

But be warned... if you just "prefer" your kidlets attend a school outside your school boundary (rather than they're signed up for a program not available at their own HS), likely you'll be shut out, even if you're willing to transport your kids back & forth yourself (busing is not offered for cross-boundary students)... but this shouldn't pose a problem in general as all three high schools are very comparable.
