I have driven from Phoenix to Austin numerous times as well as the Denver to Pheonix route thru Albequerque. There is no way I'd go through Albuquerque to get to Austin, that increases the distance you have to cover, the roads are not as good and you are more likely to encounter bad weather the further North you are. Stay on I-10 until you hit 290 (after Junction, TX) then take 290 the rest of the way into Austin. Its good roads and safe the whole way.

I drove Austin to Phoenix a couple times and took the route CaptnRn suggested. It was a long uneventful trip broken up by my staying in a motel just after leaving Texas.

Can you help me, I'm driving from Phoenix to Austin in October 2011, if I go I-10 would it be advisable & safe for a female driver. I would not drive at nite, just conscerned about crime & safety. Can you help?

I-10 is perfectly safe. Nothing to worry about.

Note, large portions of I-10 in Texas have a maximum speed limit allowed of 80 miles an hour during the daytime, these are long straight stretches of road. Speed limits in the United States - Speed Limits I believe the State legislature just increased that to 85 mph, but it will probably take awhile for it to be implemented.

Looks reasonable. I believe you left out I-10 from LA to Phoenix. Make sure you take into consideration the heat of the places you will be driving through. Make sure your car is in good condition, and carry lots of water. We drove from SF to Austin twice last year, and noticed that a lot of the rest stops in Arizona are closed due to their budget problems. So stop whenever you see an open one, and be prepared for some closures. One other thing - make sure you aren't landing in the LA area during the evening rush hour. I know your route is pretty far out there, but people do commute to San Bernardino, etc.
