Exactly. Most years we don't even turn on our AC's (we live in a house built for the climate back in the early part of the 20th century so use window units) until late June/early July, except for the last few years. This is much more like what I've been used to over the past four decades of living in Austin and vicinity.

This is such a great observation. I also noticed the same thing when I moved here. Back in Boston, all the smokers I knew had quit by the time I left. And it had become far less culturally acceptable to smoke in general. It's different here for sure.

From the CDC:

Quote:
[In Travis County] the adult smoking rate is 9.9%. Smoking is particularly prevalent among young adults in the county, as 39% of Travis County residents aged 18-29 years are smokers.
Quote:
In Texas, 18.5% of the adult population (aged 18+ years)—over 3,257,000 individuals—are current cigarette smokers. Across all states, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults ranges from 9.3% to 26.5%. Texas ranks 27th among the states.
Quote:
In the Boston metropolitan area, the adult smoking rate is 14.4%, which is comparable to the state adult smoking rate of 14.1%. Tobacco use is a particularly serious problem among Boston youth. Approximately 10% of Boston high school students reported smoking a cigarette in the past 30 days.
Quote:
In Massachusetts, 14.1% of the adult population (aged 18+ years)—over 815,000 individuals—are current cigarette smokers. Across all states, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among adults ranges from 9.3% to 26.5%. Massachusetts ranks 9th among the states.
Travis County adult smoking rate is 9.9%, the Boston Metro is 14.4%; however, Texas overall has a higher rate of smokers.

Almost everyone I know in Austin fits into that age 18-29 category, so 39% sounds about right.

There are only two Subaru dealerships in the metro area (one in Austin, one in Georgetown). So there isn't a high density of them yet. I think I only notice other Subarus because I drive one...

I don't get the Subaru reference. I drove one in NC, VA, WV where a higher ground clearance AWD vehicle was actually needed from time to time. Didn't smoke then, don't smoke now. Not many places in central Texas where the capabilities of a Subaru are needed on a regular basis.
I've purchased three Volvos from the dealer that shares a showroom with Subaru...they seem busy enough but I've not been compelled to purchase another Subie after driving multiple Volvos. What's the connection?

I think Roger Beasley Subaru is top sales winner many months of the year:
From an article:
. it gets even better! We were #1 in the San Antonio, Dallas, Bryan/College Station and Waco/Killeen metro areas as well! We couldn't have accomplished this without the awesome sales team at Subaru of Georgetown

There's only ONE Lexus dealer for a hundred miles...and those cars are swarming the place! What's the point?

And none of the major Texas cities have as many smokers as any major northeast city. Maybe there's more in the rural areas, but not in the cities.

Per the stats quoted above, 39% of people aged 18-29 smoke in Travis county. I'd say that's quite a lot.
