I'm looking at a house in Rollingwood with no gas. There is natural gas on the street, but not piped to the house.

If I ever decide to get a gas hot tub or heated pool, I'll need gas. Does anybody know:

1) approximate cost for connecting to gas under the street? (just underground to the back yard for now)

2) cost of burying a big propane tank?

3) ongoing cost of delivered propane vs. street natural gas per BTU? Which tends to be cheaper, and is it a significant difference?

Paul

Propane tends to be far more expensive. There are lots of threads on this forum with people complaining about high propane prices. //www.city-data.com/forum/searc...rchid=28126074

With natural gas in Austin I paid $541 for the entire year, $19-$104/month. Only 4 months were more then $35/month. Some of those propane treads linked above complained about paying over $490/month.

Sorry about that. Should have searched first.

Lost the bid on the house (I knew I should have gone a few k higher!), so moot point for now.

It depends on whether or not you get to choose your propane supplier. We own our tank, are out in the country and not required by any subdivision to use "their" supplier. In our case, propane in the country is cheaper than the natural gas that we were required to buy from one supplier in the city.

Now, we HAVE paid $300 in one month, but then we didn't have to buy propane again for five or six months. This is in a house built between 1900 and 1930, which is not the most airtight or insulated of houses and where propane fuels heat, cooking and hot water.

I'd not buy in a subdivision where I was required to use a specific supplier. Just wouldn't.
