I was out walking my dog this morning and saw the garbage men out collecting the "recycles" from the new green garbage cans they gave us. All those recyclables being tossed together in the back of a regular trash truck, getting mashed and mixed together - the sound of broken glass co-mingling with it all.

So, when they get back to the "recycling station" with all of it - do they separate the glass slivers from the mashed up boxes and cans?

I've wondered the same thing, but did catch part of a TV segment where they showed the mixed materials being sorted on a conveyor belt at an Ausin plant.

They do say don't put any broken glass in the can, so it seems odd they would squish it all up loading the stuff. Or maybe the guys on the collection truck don't care?

From what I saw, it's just a regular garbage truck picking it all up - with the masher on the back pushing it all back into the truck. All they'll be "sorting" out back at the recycling center is a wad of cardboard, plastic and broken glass!

That is the way single stream recycling works. It all gets sorted out later. City of Austin - Single Stream Recycling

That was a nice video. In it they said that they pick up recycling every other week. Is that still the case? We fill a bin (or "cart") like that every week here. If they don't pick up recycling weekly, guess we'll have to get 2 bins.

They pick it up every 2 weeks but give you a huge 90 gallon cart on wheels, probably 2.5' square and 3.5' tall. They say:

If you cannot fit all of your recyclables in your cart, you may place additional items in a cardboard box or a reusable container. They will be picked up at no extra change.

Thanks Cptn! Our current bin is 64 gal, so that should work. DH is unfortunately not much of a recycler, so I couldn't imagine him taking three bins down for trash collection. If I have any overflow recycling, he just dumps it into the trash.

Well, we may be moving to Round Rock from Chicago, so having a crappy recycling program may help us feel right at home!

It is not crappy, the OP was mistaken, it exceeds what most other communities have. Check it out. http://www.roundrocktexas.gov/home/index.asp?page=378
