Hi folks ... if, hypothetically, a home you purchased developed severe structural problems with a swimming pool that was installed by the previous owner (and by a contractor who no longer exists), would the repair costs be coverable under your homeowner's policy?

Or are you SOL?

I would imagine if, say, the roof caved in on your house because the contractor didn't engineer and support the load correctly, your insurance would cover repairs, but I'm curious about the pool.

HO insurance covers theft, fire and other perils but not poor workmanship.

It should be spelled out in your policy what it covers. Reading it is always a good idea.

In this case, you would sue the contractor and the engineer who signed off on the plans for your house, their E&O (errors and omission insurance) might cover the loss but most homeowner's policies would not.

And that is only if you can prove that poor workmanship was the cause of the problem, and not some outside source such as neglected maintenance etc.
