Waving was expected in Southern California. I always gave a quick wave partly out of fear in some areas. Road rage with guns happened every once in a while in Southern California especially in the 90's. A quick wave is a good way to settle any road rage that somebody might be feeling if they felt that you cut them off when really you just merged into traffic.

When I voted I was shocked at the results. I voted No.

I live in Minneapolis/St. Paul and there is the occasional wave, but it is not a common occurrence. (Of course, we are known as being terrible/aggressive drivers, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked.)

I'm glad I read this thread! I move down there in June and if I hadn't read it, I would be really confused when people started glaring at me!

I wave, but of course, it is sort of predicated on the situation -
- If there is plenty of room and I pull over into an adjacent lane, then there is no waving involved, it is just driving as meant to be.
- If someone has to physically slow down to let me in, they will ALWAYS get a quick wave unless there is some traffic situation that makes me pay more attention to what is going on.
- If we (the car letting me in and myself) are doing the 'zipper' (trading lanes at an on/off ramp area), then I don't usually wave - we are not so much letting one or the other in, we are just driving like sensible people.

I think I confused the question. Is it asking "do you wave if someone lets you change lanes?" or is it asking "do you wave back to people that wave to you in traffic?"

I thought it was the latter and I said no. If I let someone in front of me and they wave, I usually leave it at that. They probably aren't looking in their rear-view mirror for a response, anyways.

And yes, I do occasionally wave if someone has gone out of their way to let me in (or gestures "go ahead"). But I usually slip in when people aren't paying attention or keep like 4 car lengths distance in front of them. I don't thank anyone for my traffic-ninja skillz.
