And if you see some idiot doing it, feel free to let the Don't Mess with Texas folks know about it: Report a Litterer - Don't Mess With Texas ::dontmesswithtexas.org::. Nothing like a cigarette butt starting up a wildfire during this crazy drought.

Impeccable timing! I was driving to work this morning, and I saw a Dell employee take his last drag from his square and tossed the butt into the grass.

In the past, this type of behavior bothered me, but not to the point where I would report it.

This morning, I felt compelled to report it, but I didn't know to whom. Every morning on my way to work, I see Dell employees taking their cigarette breaks, and I'm sure many of them use the grass as their butt receptacle.

If you're on a big freeway, I don't see the problem with throwing your butts out on it. With all the cars passing by and stuff, I doubt it'll catch the concrete on fire, or make it's way to the grass side and start a fire. To be safe though, I just put mine out before tossing it.

I don't think I could live with myself if I knew one of my butts caused a fire and had a few folks' homes burn down.

Glad I'm smart enough to use an ashtray...

Sure, as long as it's not on fire, everyone should feel free to throw their trash wherever they want.

It's a cigarette butt. Those things are biodegradable. It's not like I'm throwing my trash from Burger King out of the window and onto the highway (bag, cup and all).

A) Littering is wrong regardless of whether the item is bio degradable or not. Feces are biodegradable, but you shouldn't be throwing that out of your window either. It's sad that your mother never taught you this.

B) While cigarette butts are biodegradeable (although in certain enviornments that can take up to 15 years) the POISONOUS chemicals in cigarettes are transferred to the butt when they are smoked. Those chemicals are then leached into the enviornment when the cigarette butt degrades.

C) You assume that your cigarette could never start a fire b/c you put it out. Obviously you have never been educated on how wildfires get started. That's a dangerous thing to do. It's like the Dad who lets his kid play with his gun, b/c hey, he made sure it's not loaded. Right? Right? That's good gun safety.

D) It's pointless to even educate you on this because anyone who is already a smoker has no regard for their health or others well beings. Couple that with the fact that you proudly admit you toss your trash onto the side of the road, well...shrug.

Nice justification. It reminds me of a friend's Dad who used to say it was okay for him to throw his trash out the car window because "When I do, I create jobs for people who have to pick it up."

Now the excuse for throwing trash out the window is "It's no longer on fire and it's biodegradable." My friend's Dad would have liked that.

First, "I doubt" is a cop-out and nowhere near strong enough to justify risking a wildlife.

Second, it's trash, pure and simple, freeway or not. I learned long ago at my mother and father's knee never to throw anything on the ground (not even an apple core out in the country); that's why we have trash cans and bags and ash trays. No one else, not even Mother Nature, should have to clean up after you because you're too much of a slob to clean up after yourself.

Do you throw your cigarette butts on your living room floor? If not, why not? After all, they're biodegradable, aren't they? Well, not any time soon.
