Love it!

It makes me want to go to Alamo Drafthouse all the more.

I've seen speculation online that it's viral marketing. The way this appeared out of nowhere and is already being used in their trailers has me convinced that it's fake.

Alamo Drafthouse always plays a "no mobile phone no texting" video before their movies start. So they are serious about this policy.

I believe it is real.

I agree. Clever, but seemed a bit fabricated.

It made fark.com which has millions of daily readers. That's why this took off yesterday.

Texas movie theater makes an example (and a PSA) of a texting audience member - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_thelookout/20110607/us_yblog_thelookout/texas-movie-theater-makes-an-example-and-a-psa-of-a-texting-audience-member - broken link)

And I saw it on Reddit yesterday. The Reddit thread had over 2,000 replies. Both sites would be good places to launch a viral campaign.

AFAIK, it wouldn't be legal to incorporate a phone message into a trailer without the permission of the person who left the message. (A news story would be legal, but not a commercial product like a trailer.) I can't imagine that someone who left a message like that would sign a release to give permission for the theater owners to use her drunken-sounding off-the-cuff complaint however they see fit, unless they were a compensated performer. That's my biggest reason for believing this was staged and viral.

Note that the trailer says it was an "actual voicemail," to lend a layer of authenticity. A performer could leave an "actual voicemail," too.

I don't know, it might be legal in Texas, especially if the trailer is not the commercial product (it draws no revenue by itself, theoretically). Also, it is quite possible that their voice mail messages might be considered public domain by their nature.

Anyway, I would be a bit surprised if the owners made up the story after giving specific details to a reporter.

Agree again. The first thing I thought when I listened to the clip was, wow, what if I'd left a disgruntled message on a company voicemail and found out my message was broadcast worldwide without my knowledge or permission. Wrong answer.

... not sure you have a "right" to a message you knowingly left in another person's voice message machine.

That's like saying you have a "right" to an e-mail you sent someone. Short answer to that is: No, you don't. Once it's out there, it's out there.

Oh, and yea, Alamo Drafthouse's awesome. :-D

My favorite announcement was the one with the police woman saying to shut up. Hilarious!! Would like that one to be used again.
